Machax Porn

54-55rc is low, real low, like throwing knife low. I would like to see it around 57-58rc, holds edge and tough as hell. GTG, IMO. Thanks

Moose

I always thought 54-56 was about mid-range for this type of knife. Most machetes are in the low 50s (I believe), and I know a lot of older bowies and choppers used to be hardened within this range. Granted, many of those were also stainless blades. And, once again, the old Machax was only around 53-55, and it seems to have done quite well as far as toughness and edge holding are concerned (i.e. I've never heard any complaints). Just very curious.

Well, I know throwing knives are 52-55Rc and they don't hold an edge for crap. I've got some decent throwers, that "say" they have a Rc of 54, you can sharpen them all day, but they won't hold an edge must past the second stroke.

I pretty sure the Camillus Beckers used to be HT to 58-59RC. I think Kabar is bringing their HT to about 57-58Rc for some tuffness, and edge retention balance, but, only The Toooj can verify this, if he can.

Toooooooooooj!!!!!!

Could you answer this for us?

Thanks for the info, Moosez. I'll wait to see what Toooj has to say. Oh yeah, and has there been any word on a re-introduction of the Machax?

Soon? We have a pic of Toooj holding an uncut blank, that's about all.

I like the look of the blank, too. It appears that it will have a swedge similar to the Warrior Machax.

I still have the longer version and REALLY like it for field work. I was always on the careful side with it since I thought it was ground a little on the thin side!

Longer version? That's a horrible thing to keep!:D You'd do well to get rid of it!

So, the Cinci era was before Blackjack when Ethan was on his own? Just trying to understand the timeline...

probably referring to the Reinhardt Khukri, which pre-dates Camillus, and isn't a Machax.

OR maybe the Patrol Machete, which isn't a Machax either, but is a fine chopping tool.

well, back in the day, Ethan made them himself in Cincinnati, early models with walnut handles and with some assistants and outside excellent heat treat?, Becker Knife and Tool company did its thing... as i recall, Machax and Brute were the first two, then "div tuls" and "tac tuls"...

then along the way, it got bigger... joined up with Blackjack of Cincinnati, and produced more of the above, and added Brutes, and a Reinhardt flavor...

then Camillus, with the actual numbering of the blades, and adding a whole lot more models.

then KaBar, and well, there we are, with even MORE models and flavors.

something like that. i suppose this could now be expanded with dates and places. the very good googlers will find some dates, but i've seen conflicts, and even Ethan said some where wrong, so i've never quite gotten around to it - Ethan should write that :)

the very clever will figure out how to find my top level photo gallery, and peruse the Becker pictures there, and full literatures, and so on ;)

So when are you going to write up the official Wikipedia entry?

what i said... Ethan needs to pull his weight around here ;)

Thanks for the info, Bladite! I scoured your sticky thread and was still unclear on the very early timeline, so thanks for clearing that up! Waiting the next 5 days is going to be agonizing. The more time passes, the more the fever takes hold...

here's a shot of the Machax prototype in its current form:

I like that the tip is not as much "warrior" but not just like the original. Evolution is the spice of consumerism!!
