"Made in Sheffield" 1830-1930, A golden age ?

Not the most strikingly beautiful I*XL, but cool in its own right, this 3 3/4"
cast iron (or steel?) Jack is quite impressive to me!! Snappy, well marked, with lots of gravitas, but still not too heavy, I really like it!! ;)

I think it's very cool Charlie  I would have thought it was cast steel rather iron, as cast iron is brittle? 🤔

I downloaded a scan of a Hibberd, Spencer, & Bartlett catalogue with one in, from the sticky, but the resolution is very poor. I'll see if I have a better image, I dare say H herder will have :)

Thanks, Jack!👍 You are right of course! Must be steel, as the handles are thin, and iron would be at risk of cracking!! Maybe Neal will have a picture also!!

I've definitely seen a better quality image of that knife somewhere Charlie! :D I've often heard Sheffield cutlers refer to 'Iron bolsters', or to a knife as 'all iron', when they're actually referring to (carbon) steel rather than iron

Charlie I love that Steel I*XL,, ready for any task that's for sure!

Herder exquisite example of Ford & Medley's work! What a Beauty that Knife is!, Those Older Sheffield Cutlers knew just how to use Stag- just beautiful!

Agree with hank on that one

Been looking for a nice stag Sheffield curved blade rope knife for some time and managed to land this beauty last week. Made by Hunter, who I can find no information on other than one reference that states maybe mid 1800's. Other interesting stamps are the British Admiralty broad arrow and what looks like the number 104, these have been overstamped by broad arrows facing each other, my research says this designates that the knife was sold out of service or surplus. Common on old British firearms but not so much on knives.
Typical of Sheffield knives of this era it has knock out stag.IMG_3894.jpegIMG_3897.jpegIMG_3899.jpegIMG_3904.jpegIMG_3906.jpegIMG_3907.jpegIMG_3901.jpeg

That sure is a beauty Augie, you are right- the Old Sheffield's of the day have incredible Stag on them- and there's a great example!
I wouldnt mind betting that the S[ring is near 1/4 inch thick!!! Just awesome powerful knives! I really like the Old Font of the Stampings and those Stovepipes!

I was intrigued so I looked up hunter, there were a couple of very well known Cutler Gentleman, Edward Hunter and Alfred Hunter, both separate from each other - but both apparently very well known for their Great Knives, then the bigger M. Hunter & Sons- theres quite the write up on this one which I didnt have time to get into at this moment.

Man...just look at that Stag Glow!

Thank you for the information Duncan, I'm pretty sure its not Hunter & Sons, will have to try to find more on the other 2, Goins and Levine have almost nothing on Hunter.

Congratulations, what a great-looking knife  It's late here, and my brain is shutting down for the night, but I think that's the late 19th century (1870) Royal Navy Clasp Knife. Ron Flook is the recognised authority in this area. I'll drag out my Tweedale tomorrow if it's of help
