"Made in Sheffield" 1830-1930, A golden age ?

Thanks Jack ... you have confirmed all I have found... like you it was notably missing from Tweedale but not sure every little known cutler from Sheffield is included in that book - though Tweedale is a great resource with many listings... a friend of mine like you noted there were John Butlers he found in old directories from Sheffield but not a John "Hart" Butler... interesting and I suppose a more rare maker to find... Your input is so much appreciated Jack!!!

Thanks my friend, I wish I could be of more help. Tweedale is pretty exhaustive, but I think plenty of minor or obscure cutlers will have been omitted. I've had a few knives myself which I've been unable to trace. Of course, as I'm sure you've already considered, it's always possible that John Hart Butler was a factor trading elsewhere.

Bumping this thread with a fine old sportsman's model. This six blade folder was made in Sheffield on contract for the Harrods department store in London, England, and is marked "Harrods Brompton RD" on the blades.
It also has pull tweezers and pick at the end of the handle by the bail.
Harrods was established in 1834 by Charles Henry Harrod and is recognized world wide as one of the premiere department stores.

That Sportsman looks great, Neal. Can you show the pile side?
What's on the Shield?? Tell us more!!!;)

Thanks Waynorth. The initials lightly etched on the shield are "G B" and no idea when they were put on or by who.
I would guess this knife dates to right around 1900, give or take a decade. As we know, these old Sheffield multi-blade sportsman's knives were around long before the Swiss Army models.
Here is a picture of the back side.

Nice knife, herder.

...I wonder why the gimlet seems to have disappeared from common use on folding knives after the 70s. Maybe it was the manufacturing cost? It's a useful tool.

Thanks, and I'm sure you are correct that it was due to the cost which must have been more than to produce a standard blade. I'm surprised that so many have survived on old knives, I would have guessed that most of them would have been broken over time.

Nice knife and interesting as a knife with Harrods on the stamp  ... I have visited Harrods on occasion in London but just to browse - never bought anything there given most things have ridiculous prices :).. - I wonder how this was priced long ago given the store and relative to other retailers in that time period?? ;)

Been almost a year since anyone posted in this great thread. After the big change many of the beautiful photos are gone. I am reposting some of mine with John's great photos.

I really enjoyed this thread and all the great posts and knife pictures so I couldn't just let it slip away. Thanks Duncan. I hope Mick will post again.

When was that Duncan? I was hoping to meet up with Mich a few years back, and we were planning to visit Trevor Ablett together. However, the last time I emailed him, maybe two years ago, I didn't get a response. I also hope he's well

Hi Jack
Gee last time I pm’d with Mick - it would have been three to four years ago- possibly slightly longer actually then he was away from the forums for longer periods.

Mick has been posting on his twitter account. I've tried emailing him over the past two or three years but no response. We used to trade a lot of emails years ago.

Thanks for breathing life back into this thread Charles. Those are some magnificent knives; same for Duncan's post.
