"Made in Sheffield" 1830-1930, A golden age ?

Charles - Those knives are just awesome Sheffield quality to revive this thread  .. and thanks for bringing it back to the top!! I agree it is ashame so many photos were lost but like you I will try and post some from the past as well as new ones :) ...

Duncan - Those ettricks knives and original box are just awesome  ..

Mike - Beautiful IXL Senators knife   ...

Here's a contribution to try and help & something a little different - I had the George Woodhead Bowie for awhile but recently was lucky enough to find a Woodhead swell-center MOP pen.. I do believe Woodhead was most known for his Bowies (ca 1850-60s) and from my understanding his pocket knives were more rare... (PS - As much as I like Bowies they are usually well out of my league in price - I just got lucky on this one from a local find, and of course the pen knife was also lucky - found the last 30 minutes at a knife show where I least expected to find it ..)...

Mick has been posting on his twitter account. I've tried emailing him over the past two or three years but no response. We used to trade a lot of emails years ago.

Thanks for breathing life back into this thread Charles. Those are some magnificent knives; same for Duncan's post.

Great looking historical knives, exactly what I miss about this thread. Thanks for posting and keeping this thread going.

Jack: very unusual knife, but you have to love that old Sheffield stag. Nice piece!

Thank you my friend :) When I showed it to Stan Shaw, he looked at the Rase blade on the inside of the frame, and insisted, "Thi've not med it reight!" o_O :D

Yes, Wellington had pictures of some of the best Sheffield knives I've ever laid eyes on, many in remarkable preservation and all very old. When you have such a beautiful collection, perhaps collecting itself becomes flat, hence his silence? Anyway, glad to hear he is still around.

@Campbellclanman Listen matey, that's an unbelievable hoard of Ettricks you've got there:cool: Is that the stash Charlie found a little while ago? I know NZ has a mass of sheep but those knives could take care of diping and foot clipping the whole national flock;) Talk about a hoard of riches:eek: :D

Regards, Will

chuko - Thanks for bringing this thread back and adding some of your beautiful lost pictures.

Campbellclanman - Spectacular group and box.

Mike R. - Simply beautiful pearl IXL.

LongBlade - Wonderful pair, fitting for a gentleman in the 1800s.

Jack - A really great old Butler example and I love all the blade stampings.

Thank you very much my friend :)

Enclosed is a Sheffield made "H. G. Long" from the mid 1800s. It is a fairly large "English Jack" type lock back folder with a handle length of 6 inches.
It also has nickel silver folding guards which were not very common on old Sheffield folders. And beautiful old English stag handles.
