Made my first knife!

Fantastic job Pinky! Ban is a great guy who will I am sure be a great help in your learning.
I wish I lived a little closer to other people that could help me out a bit.

I have been getting away from Busse knives and more into old style frontier knives but that Public defender is awesome.

It is not that expensive to get into knife making. Start with annealed 1095 or other simple carbon air hardening steel. You need a dremel ,a angle grinder with cutting disks and one of those bench belt grinders from harbour freight like Horn Dog has. You should also have a few files and lots of sandpaper. You can send your blades away for heat treating which makes things easier. Simple full tang single edged knives are what you should start with.

Nice work. It looks like a really cool design.

I just saw this on another form I like to visit on occasion, so I'll just post it again!

That looks really good for a first knife! Congrats.

Huy....that thing is f**king sick!!!!!!!! It deserves its own thread.

Hahah! Glad you guys like it. I'm heading to Boomstick's house in an hour to make some leather pants for it and maybe I'll make a new thread. I cut some apples and a cool patina is already starting to form.

Yo tiny... nice to see ya here... glad to hear all is well...

has it been getting cold over there....

looking forward to seeing the finished product MR.PINK...

Whats up Mike!?!? good to hear from you too. It is starting to get colder, is is still in around the 50s in the day, and the nights are a little warm but it is starting to cool down.

I left the knife in his hands overnight before we got started on the handles and he said he couldn't stand the scratches and surprised me with his trademark frosty finish the next day!

Dam I was going to bribe you to tell us how he gets that finish .

Richard

The finish is beautiful on the blade so I put off doing this for a little while just to admire it. Now that it's formed some patina from kitchen use, I decided to finally test the steel. That means fire time. :D

An old piece of dry hard cedar.

There was a fat knot right around here so I did a bit of prying.

The knot.

I was a little lazy today so I used the old cotton pad and petroleum jelly trick.

Fire!

Nice.

Besides one tinnnny roll and a few small scratches (Ban's frosty finish hides them well), the blade did excellent. The edge retention is really good. Even thought the handles are a little bit narrow, it was still comfortable for the most part.

My first thought on viewing the public defender was....if the edge was on the other side...that has PIKAL style written all over it! Excellent work!
