Magnacut Dulled Pretty Fast

Too many pretty edges, y'all need to see more messy edges from the wild.

MTech knife used be a non knife guy friend, zero edge maintenance, He was trying to cut things using his body weight, possibly 420j2 steel, soft, low carbide volume.

The parallel grooves are from wear over time with cutting.

Edge failure from poor maintenance and no wear resistance in the steel.

Solution? I gave him a 15V knife 😜
 
It has been well known that CTS-XHP has better edge retention and wear resistance than MagnaCut but I haven’t heard that MagnaCut is very far behind. As others say MagnaCut is tougher and certainly more corrosion resistant so a more balanced steel. But CTS-XHP lags behind most of the stainless super steels in corrosion resistance. I’d say sharpen and keep up some side by side cutting of the various materials and see where that leads. I’ve done some pretty gritty, hard pressure yard work with CTS-XHP and never saw any issues with toughness. Doesn’t have the sexy name but is one high level performer as yours has shown so far.
I wouldn’t say it is well known that CTS-XHP has better edge holding or wear resistance than MagnaCut. Their wear resistance is pretty close and MagnaCut is tougher. I bet if we took two spyderco mules in these steels for example and sharpened them exactly the same then outside of a lab and very precise experiments no one would be able to tell the difference in edge holding when cutting. If anything it would be expected that MagnaCut edge could last longer in the situations where chipping is the main dulling mechanism.
 
I once cut up some carpet using a S90v blade. You guessed it, it dulled quickly. Sand is an edge killer.
I found that that's when geometry really counts...so that you can continue the job.

I used this E.J. Coles knife I got when I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch in the mid 1970's to cut and fit a carpet for my apartment's living room. The edge dulled but it was thin enough behind the edge to keep working, if not as efficiently. Clearly the steel was nowhere near MagnaCut.Scan_185.jpg
 
I typically never judge a steel by the factory edge. Between the heat created while they were being sharpened and the unknown grit and angle of the edge. Sharpen the knife a few times and see if there is any improvement, 95% of my Spyderco's cut better, and last longer, after I have sharpened them a few times.
 
It's k390 so it's kinda apples to bowling balls, but I cut an old 13' diameter, 4' deep pool into 2'x2' squares. It had been in sand and dirt for years, and the edge still bites into my nail and slices paper fine (minus the obvious chips, but they're from whittling antler, not cutting up the pool).

~15 degrees (chisel ground, so inclusive).

I agree on geometry.

This was an outdoor carpet with embedded sand. Any edge would have dulled. The knife was a Spyderco, so decent geometry out of the box.

Yikes, might be best it increase the edge angle if you're ever surrounded by antlers 🫎
 
the dirt/sand factor should dull anything fairly quickly. I learned long ago cutting ductboard.....aka glass fibers will dull any steel in one long cut. I dont see sand as much different on killing sharp edges.

the xhp did how many of these straps with dirt/sand embedded? same amount?

I have been using , modding and reprofiling Magnacut the last couple months and using the knives everyday at work and I am surprised at how well I like the alloy . Usually I have no use for Stainless and MUCH prefer tool steel (M4 , 3V , K390 , 15 V etc .) but I was finally curious enough to give it a go and it behaves , on the stones and cutting stuff , like tool steel .

Dirt has all sorts of tiny fine particles like sand and stuff, it’ll destroy any edge. I’d save work like that for a utility knife.
I have to cringe every time I see the following . . .
Someone posts an image of their knife stuck in the dirt , at a camp site or what ever .

Dirt will dull all knife steels quickly.
One of my biggest takeaways from BF is that cutting anything tough to cut will dull a knife. I generally use my favored blades to cut things that are easy to cut like threads and pork rinds bags. For anything else I use a beater knife, hatchet, saw or disposable utility blades like in a box cutter. My good blades stay really sharp.
