I have to cringe every time I see the following . . .
Someone posts an image of their knife stuck in the dirt , at a camp site or what ever .

What's that about ? ? ?
Did they see it in a cowboy movie and think it is how cool guys behave ?
DON'T DO THIS ! ! !

I am glad to have the information on dirt, but let's be real. You can't always insist life provide you with the best thing to cut.

Still haven't broken out the sharpener.

Sharpening is half the fun.

I respectfully disagree. I hate sharpening. But I still had to buy $500 worth of sharpening equipment to begrudgingly sharpen my knives once in a while. It’s my civic duty.

Agreed, I'm doing dumb stuff with my knife all the time and I refuse to think about it.

One of the joys of using non super steels. Damage? 5 min and done, most of the time just strop.

Saying that, and as others have mentioned... I don't even consider using a new knife until it's been reprofiled through a deep sharpening session that eliminates any hot factory edges.

As far as I know, there are practically zero production houses that cold grind with water etc. It would be super impractical on a large scale.

Pretty much what I do...but I use the Sharpmaker afterward as my angle guide and adjust accordingly...such as to microbevel or remove a burr.

If I can use ceramics, I will. Otherwise I have the Spyderco diamond rods or a bunch of DMT plated diamonds, Venev bonded diamonds, and an assortment of other weapons to be called upon as required.

I'm still what I'd consider just average, but at least I have fun when I'm not tearing out my hair. LOL

Yup. I can get a knife very sharp free hand but the edge may not be as symmetrical as I’d like. So if I’m gonna re-profile the edge on a $500 knife, I have to put in the work to make sure the bevel is nice and even.

I am pretty green when it comes to sharpening even though I've been using folders and fixies forever. I have some good work sharp field sharpeners, and others from fallkniven and benchmade, some strops--- but i still managed to dull a "sharp* magnacut knife on a strop. Im sure its probably 100% my technique despite trying to learn from a couple well-known sharpening influencers on YT. Magnacut is still a newish steel which should age well as it is continually used and provided with real world use feedback
