MagnaMax hitting the market

My inexperienced, uninformed and often faulty interpretation of the chart of steel characteristics leads me to think that a steel that is superior to Magnicut would have to move its data points up and to the right on the plot.

Do I have that right?

Has this been presented on The Blade Forums yet, or must I google around to find that?

From what I recall Magnacut is very good in toughness, edge retention and rust resistance.
A very nicely balanced steel.

Magnamax focuses more on edge retention losing a bit on toughness.

I am probably wrong.....

I will avoid the 420V/440V resharpen-ability issues in my future knives. Better edge wear is good to a point!

I am not buying diamond-coated wheels to sharpen a pocketknife!

No, you're not wrong. But MagnaMax has a lot more toughness than steels with similar wear resistance. It's wear resistance it between 10V and S110V, while the toughness is about like S35VN. That's pretty amazing performance.

I'd love it if my Arius had MagnaMax and not M390.

Magnamax is essentially a stainless K390. I have been excited about magnamax becoming available (ya'll know my preference for S90V) and have scored a small amount to try. Those blades are at heat treat now. One will be my daily use knife when finished.

Stainless isn't that important to Me....Almost stainless is good enough.
What I'm excited about is this type of steel (k390, 10v, or Magnamax) being made in readily available sizes and quanities, at an affordable price.....

I can't wait till the steel industry to "get normal" back again

To Larrin, LOTSN (Lord of the Steel Nerds):

Please invent Elven steel so we can be done with this.
