Magnum Camp!!!!

wow.. was hoping it'd be priced a little lower.. but that's not too bad. Definitely on my christmas list.

last one i saw on ePray was $$$ so < $90 street price is pretty good!

i expect to see a few people trading up, so folx that want the older models are going to be some deals.

per Toooj Meister, the new model is based on the original blackjack model. the Camillus one wasn't quite as true to form; thus the KaBar version is going to slice circles around the Camillus model.

i'm told that Jerry Fisk is very happy with this design. if Jerry is happy, you will be happy :D

so, save your pennies, get to ordering

Mr.Fisk doesn't pay for my knives. I honestly think the magnum camp knives I admired were considerably broader and quite sturdy looking. This one looks like Kabar went cheap on the dimensions to improve the profit margin. Throw it back and wait for it to get bigger.

I personally like the continuous belly. Similar to a Persian style, which I love. It should, for all intents and purposes, (pardon the following cliche') CUT and SLICE like a laser (you know, those things knives are intended for). Bladite, any idea on thickness? I'm sure it's par for the course (3/16ish), but ya' never know.

.188 which is roughly 3/16ths, as above (.1875 for you mathics)

i expect mine... soonish. probably not this week, but well, there we are.

then i can do some pictures in hand, and overlapping an older model.

personally, from looking at the profiles, i feel it was Camillus that cheaped out, but flattening the curve. easier to grind that way.

check out the blackjack model in the picture above, and how it continues to sweep down, and doesn't go flat.

the new model is 1/4 to 1/2 inch shorter based on numbers i'm seeing. won't know until i have one to compare all three with (lengths, weights, profiles). perhaps someone will beat me to it :)

i'm also told that the balance on the new model is superb, which matters as well.

Drool worthy pic there!

If you are correct in saying it's a little shorter, than to my eyes, the blade is narrower than even the skinny version of the camp knife. I was really hoping for an "Effingham era" magnum camp. Well,at least I don't have to sell a kidney now.

the two pictures are not to scale, so it's a tricky comparison visually. we just have numbers for now. when i have knife in hand, i can easily compare with overlay, and grids. course, i COULD probably just scale one to the other, match handle bolts, rotate, and fiddle, but that seems too much like work :)

a defining factor is that the handle hasn't changed at all in size, so width just past the choil, actually looks fatter to me than even the Effingham/Blackjack era.

the new knife being < $90, that's a cheap kidney. the Effingham ones still fetch a little money. the Camillus ones? we'll see, but i bet the market there just "tanked" out.

now, off to shoot a heron. with my camera. woot!

It's not the knife,it's the shipping that kills ya! Good luck with the heron.

well, some folx have been enjoying spAmazon prime with free shipping on some of these deals, and prices that seem pennies over the MAP. course, it's nice if you have a favored dealer who does you right over perhaps the anonymous source. shipping at cost vs magical shipping rates (like one sometimes sees on ePray - $20? 30? someone's cheating or on crack)

the heron is shot. need to upload later. very color blue type. action shots.

nap time first :>

you might just get yours before mine. i hope not :) i made sure to order some of the new BK-13 Remoras too, figure every full-size becker will have a "karda" utility knife with it :> plus one for pocket carry/etc.

interesting watching those prices as the vendors get their listings up.

actually, tomar is already up with specs/etc. MMM. they're pretty consistent with BC. interesting :)

Hey TWBryan.....

Jerry and the estimable Tooj spent a LOTTA time getting the balance and feel so that Mr. Jerry was a happy man....the final dimensions have IMPROVED the blade......The balance of both the Blackjack blades and the Cam built ones were damn close to perfect but the new one is Very interesting in the hand indeed.....Bear in mind please that this design is at least 20 years old and Jerry's mind has not stood still in the interim....Many of his better friends may have an unflattering opinion of how much mind there actually was 20 years ago, but I am certain he was happy to revisit the original design and apply his vastly improved and more experienced design abilities to an old favorite....If (and I doubt it)there are any "savings" with the new design they are accidental....Ka-Bar just a'int likely to nickel and dime Jerry Fisk.......

I am already feeling the needle over my redo of my first design and we are not even in prototype stage....Yes it will be diffferent and it WILL be an improvement because 25 years out I think I have spotted some places to make the knife work better.......The BEST Machax was a late Cincy made blade And it is thinner than the Camillus blade and works a whole great big bunch better because the BALANCE is marvelous....Camillus spent a nickel or a dime extra on a fatter blade because all my buddies who had original full 1/4 inch blades said they liked them better than the later ones.....The Cam ones turned out to be useful tools but they lacked the balance to be much more than sharpened clubs........I keep a Cam era one in my toolbox on the Kubota and it reminds me every single time of my mistake.........Thicker can be better wider can be better but it a'int always so.........But I digress.....The new Fisk has a LOVELY balance and it is awesome quick, which was Jerry's intent 20 years ago and unlike a Jerry and me ancient self 25 years down the road, it is much more lively in the hand and perhaps just a tad better looking.....

All Best....

ethan

nicely said Ethan :)

and if nothing else, 25 years later, the knives are good looking ;)

can't wait to see Machax 2.0

even a sharpened club can probably be fixed by a good edge meister to thin it out some and convex it. perhaps something to try if i get my hands on another camillus model

really looking forward to trying the new Magnum Camp out though, esp in the kitchen. perhaps i'll retire my current user :>

Thanks for the response Mr.Becker, from what I can tell the knife will be a good slicer. I was hoping for something that did more though, but you can't please everyone.
