I'm sure this topic has been discussed before here in the "Wilderness & Survival Skills" forum.....but I have to ask. Which show/person do you prefer to watch. For me I like watching both shows, but I prefer Les Strouds program to Bear Grills any day of the week. Les's program seems to be a little more focused on real situations with more practical survival applications. Bear's show seems to be focused more on the "fantasy/shock" aspects of survival situations. Just my opinion.

Les stroud..all the way... the guy is the real deal..check out his documentary Snowshoes and solitude it is avialible in it's enttirity on youtube

Which show/person do you prefer to watch.
Is this a trick question? :p

Les Strouds show is informative and realistic. He carries all his gear with him, alone, and demonstrates some realistic survival techniques.

Bear Gryls is a joke, is followed around by an entire horde, and his show is more a demonstration on how to get killed in the wilderness, than on how to survive. :thumbdn:

I learn more from Les. If I had to spend any amount of time with either guy, Les would be my first choice. Bear would drive me crazy with his constant jabbering. I respect what Les is doing. Bear is more entertainer than teacher. Les is a well rounded, smart and talented guy. Therefore- I prefer Survivorman, but I watch both.

Watch Les for educational purposes. I've learned a fair amount from his show. Bear's show is good for amusement/entertainment value, not much else.

That's great:D That episode: Man vs. The Wild, Wild Road Shoulder:p

I just think Les Stoud is more realistic about how to approach a survival situation.....find suitable shelter, build a quick fire, food procurment, stay put or move, etc. On the other hand, I think Bear Grill's is all about the the drama....sleep inside a rotting carcass, eat its eyeballs and or genitals, get on the move no matter what, jump into freezing water or a batch of quicksand, etc...

Plus, like the one fellow said.....Les just seems like someone who you could stand being stuck with....Bear just seems like he would be an annoying fellow.

While I also prefer Survivorman, I think people are a little hard on ol' Bear ;)

It's a fun show to watch :)

Some of these shows aren't available here in my country and only watch them via the net. My personal ratings (all completely biased and unreliable of course :D) -

Most informative: the venerable Ray Mears

Most practical: Les Stroud/Survivorman

Most entertaining: Bear Grylls/Man vs. Wild

Most "tactically inspiring": Chris Ryan/Hunting Chris Ryan

. . . and Honorable Mention: Myke Hawke/I Shouldn't Be Alive :)

Bear Grylls has definitely taken some serious flack over not being 'honest' about the show. That said, the guy has a far more impressive resume than any of the other characters mentioned here: e.g. served in the British SAS, climbed Everest, well educated etc. As for the show, it's highly entertaining, far more so that the others, but it's not a survival show. He also takes massive risks, something you probably wouldn't do unless absolutely necessary, when faced with a survival situation.

Survivorman is definitely more legit ... 7 days alone ... no crew, but it's not as entertaining. You can acquire a lot of information from both shows.

Placed in a worst-case scenario survival situation, while in hostile territory, I'd put my money on Bear to come out alive. He's got the skills, training, fitness and experience. Put to you another way: on paper he looks more capable.
