Just saw a preview for the next upcoming episode of
Man vs Wild. Gonna be set in an urban environment.
The clip showed him repelling in an elevator shaft, gaining
access to a building by blowing a dumpster up.
Anyway, with the urban survival knife thread going,
I figured I would post it here.

Man vs. Wild
Urban Survivor
TV-PG

In a special edition of Man vs Wild, Bear Grylls finds himself in a new kind of jungle -- a concrete jungle. Bear uses the same wilderness survival techniques to stay alive in a city post-disaster.

Jack Bauer doesn't really disarm nuclear bombs with is teeth, either.

I bet that'll come as a shock to some people...:D

Im looking forward to Bears new episodes. I think its good entertainment compared to the other crap thats mostly on tv nowadays.

Anybody have a link to the urban survivor preview? I just have to see the crazy stuff hes up to this time...

Its just a tv show. Nothing to worked up over.

Jack Bauer doesn't pretend to be "teaching you how to survive". Or drink shit. Or his own urine. Or dive into underwater caverns to explore (while teaching you how to survive). Or pretend to be climbing down vines under a waterfall (while wearing a hidden rappel harness with safety line). Or try to ride "wild" horses. Or any other of the thousands of stupid things that weekend warrior dropout does.

I tend to agree in part with most of you guys. I've always kind of thought that Bear Grylls is somewhat of a sensationalist and grand-stander. Some of his jungle stuff is entertaining but I'm very doubtful about all the time he supposedly spends in freezing water and so forth.

On the other show Survivorman with Les Stroud I really think that Les is more truthful and his show is more believable than Bear's is.

But from an entertainment point of view I would rather watch shows like theirs instead of some sewage like American Idol or Jerry Springer ( GOD forbid :thumbdn:) That survival show they have on National Geographic channel is more interesting than either one of the ones on Discovery. I've only see the one on NAT GEO once but it was really good I thought.

What's the name of the one on Nat Geo? I'll keep an eye out for it.

IMHO, the entertainment value goes up when he has a foil along like Will Ferrell! "Mommy!..."Don't eat the twinkie!"..."You ate the twinkie." :p

"I think I lost my penis." .... "Is there some sort of signal you can give me when it's time to drink our urine?"

They started the series off trying to pull off the whole "survival" thing, and eventually realized people were calling their bluff. The fact that they tried to pull the proverbial wool over everyone's eyes doesn't detract from the entertainment value of the show. They did nothing that countless other shows haven't done in the past - the difference is that they just didn't do it very well and were called out on it. I'm not going to listen to anything Baer says regarding how to stay alive anywhere, especially considering the fact that he actively puts himself in extreme danger fairly often with his stunts... but they sure are fun to watch.

You guys can't honestly tell me that given the opportunity, you would turn that job down. I know I wouldn't!

Why would anyone watch this fraudulent retard?

Gives me a chance to debate his actions with my 9 yr old. For the most part, even he knows when Bear is doing something stupid. It's a great teaching avenue for me.

It's only been very recently that Man V's Wild has made it on "Free to Air TV" here in Australia (I refuse to have paid TV in the house :D )

Both my kids & I try to watch every show :D

As I am currently teaching my kids the knowledge & skills they will need to survive in the Aussie bush, I see it more as a tremendous opportunity for my kids to learn how to "sort through the chaff to get to the wheat". This is going to increasingly become a skill that is needed in the modern world :thumbup:

Not everything on his shows is bull sh#t. Not everything on his shows is suitable nor advisable.

The ability to sort through information (whether it be from the TV, Politicians, Newspapers, or the Internet) is a valuable skill that I want my children to possess

IMO, Man v's Wild is worth watching for the reasons I have outlined above (not to mention the fact we get to see exotic locales that we're not likely to get to see first hand :D ).

Kind regards
Mick

you have to realize guys, that it IS a show and advertised as such.

That being said, there are extremely knowledgeable survival experts that do the preparation before Bear comes in. They root out the place about 3-4 weeks, talk to locals about all their survival knowledge, get information about the flora and fauna and come back with loads of survival techniques specific to the local situation.

THEN the producer steps in and goes "we'll use nr 23, 45, 6 and 89 because they're what create ratings!":jerkit:

Bear flies in and goes in with his crew. Now, a normal man would take path A (the safe one, like eating normal stuff, like taking a normal route instead of a chasm etc) instead of the more dangerous step B. So would Bear. But then the producer steps in and says "RATINGS guys!! think about those, so get your *ss on path B right now :grumpy:". The consultant steps in and says "I wouldn't really do it that way :o, the best way for survival and the thing that would be most sensible is ..." The producer cuts him short and says " No shit sherlock... thanks for the info, when was the last time YOU produced a show that millions watch? What, NEVER , ok, then stfu and let me make the choices, Bear, off you go, B it is!"

Now that's the reality.

Is that bad, no not at all, not everything makes sense, but there is great info in there and the techniques shown, the food eaten etc are real world stuff and well researched. There is a difference though in what is actually usefull and what is actually usefull to draw viewers.:D

you know who i want to see do a survival show?

our two Bushcrafters in Drag....... :D

Mistwalker + Joezilla!
