Yes, for a few episodes at least and probably for most outside his home area he spends a few days with them before heading off on his own. I seem to recall one episode in particular where there was even footage of the expert shown. Desert epsiode fire making with a spindle IIRC.
You're right, no one knows everything. Plants and insects in particular vary greatly throughout the world (the again they're sometimes the same).
