Man vs Wild

I have always said that, Joezilla should be the next Survivor man. He is missing his calling. Get to it JOE were waiting.

I saw the commercials for it last night.
I don't care much for a lot of what Eddie Bear does, but this coming show just looks fun to watch.
I don't get "Armageddon Man"...or so I don't think I do. I did a search last night and couldn't find it.

Either way...I've got my DVR set.

I watch it for entertainment purposes. I do learn something on every episode. Whether it is a new way to make fire, item to eat, or how NOT to do something.

My question:

If he is a survival expert then why is there a survival consultant on every show?

Why is there someone assigned to rope safety if Bear is an experienced mountaineer?

Because they also need a ratings expert for every show, and that is the guy who at the end says what kind of poo Bear needs to eat.
The survival expert is there to say how much Bear can eat without dieing.

I thought the urban show was okay. It is a big subject to be dealt with in only one show. Some ideas seem to have come from the Conspiracy guy. The one thing I liked was he did not have anything with him other than his usual stuff (knife, fire starter, etc.). A good crow bar would have come in handy. The observation that the elevator cables were covered with grease was good which is one thing from the other guy that I took exception to. I hope Gylis expands on the topic a bit.

I finally watched this show last night on Tivo. I rarely watch this show but I have to think that the cameraman is the hero of the show. I know that you can get pretty small broadcast quality video cameras these days but the cameraman is doing everything that Bear is doing and taping it all as well.

I'm reminded of the quip about Ginger Rogers, she did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in heels.

G'day Heresay

....My question:

If he is a survival expert then why is there a survival consultant on every show?

Why is there someone assigned to rope safety if Bear is an experienced mountaineer?
The answer to the first one is easy.

There are no survival experts that have extensive expertise in every location on this planet. The only true survival experts for a given region are the locals who have the knowledge & experience specific to their area.

Just look at how edible & medicinal plant species can vary from one larger region to another, from one country to another, and from one continent to another.

BTW, correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't Les Stroud also make use of local knowledge for his shows?

The scant youtube clips I've seen from Ray Mears have shown him pair up with knowledgable locals as well.

I can only guess at the answer to the second. Maybe it has to do with the controllers/producers covering their ar$e from litigation if something goes wrong.

Kind regards
Mick

P.S. He's on here tonight, and I have seats booked in front of the TV for myself & kids :D

I didn't get the urban survival show at all. He chose the filthiest most disgusting place possible to hang out and "survive". Not to mention the factory was dangerous and almost completely devoid of resources. I refuse to believe that in an entire urban area there wasn't a safer, more efficient area to explore. It seemed like the empty factory was chosen simply for it's thrills and hazzards.

I didn't get the urban survival show at all.

I think the idea was okay, but the execution was lacking some. This was Bear's "urban jungle gym":D The guy is entertaining and most of what he does is quite sensational, but there are a few gold-nuggets that you can glean from his shows...his shows are much better than most of what's on the tube, you just can't take it too serious. My 11 year old son always says "what stupid stuff is Bear going to do in this episode?":D What he does looks like a ton of fun in some great locations but it's only about 10% of "real" survival and you only really get a few cool little techniques if you pay attention.

As to getting "assistance", well, as mentioned nobody can be an expert in every environment and even the "experts" received training from locals in areas they don't have knowledge of the local area. The good news is that most techniques can be modified to work in several different areas and your basic needs are all the same. I don't know how knowledgeable Bear really is, but he does show some good improvisation at times and even if he is a goober, he's in extremely good shape for the acrobatics he does to keep ratings high. I would opt to watch Man Vs. Wild over Oprah anytime...even reruns!

he did climb mt everest
ya cant bulls*%t yr way thru that

the show
entertainment
plain n simple

Yes, His show may be for entertainment ,but people could easily die trying some of his BS

People could easily die trying to do many of the things on television. If BG raises awareness for preparedness in the outdoors, which is all 95% of the gen pop may take away from it anyway then it is a good thing. If someone wants to either duplicate a stunt off The Amazing Race, or dive off a cliff into a freezing whitewater river in the middle of the wilderness because they saw Bear Grylls do it on TV, well then...........

yeah same with fight club, jackass, alice in wonderland, csi etc etc etc

Those shows are not being billed as instructional. Bear says at the beginning of each episode that he will teach you what you need to survive.
