Manix 2 uneven blade grind

100 bucks is alot of money. I'm referring to nit picky reasons to send a blade back, like an uneven grind. I think it's important people understand this is a product made by hand by a craftsman, it's not a computer program that's the same every time. With all the problems finding Para2s, maybe if Spyderdo didn't have to deal with bs returns they could focus on making new blades.

There are real problems with new blades sometimes, it happens, but half of what I see are no big deal.

From my understanding hollow grinds (at least from the manufacturing video's I've seen) are not done by hand but by two wheels placed at appropriate distances.
Essentially these machines need calibration, which is obviously lacking when some of these manix 2's come with bad blade grind.

In the manufacturing there's plenty of machine work, not a lot of hand labor. It's the assembling/QC where labor can kick in the harshest.

Lets say it is built by hand.. It takes just as long to build it incorrectly as it does to build it correctly. People should expect quality and craftsmanship. If your standards are low that's fine, But there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be proud of that American Made product. We as americans should have a little more pride in our craftsmanship like we used too.

I'm obviously not getting my point across. An uneven grind is not made incorrectly, nor is it a reason for a return to the factory. If you want to be that picky you'll never be happy. How does it affect performance? It doesn't.

I don't think anyone's money is for you to decide what we should expect for it.

It's a little hard to ignore some flaws, for example: a 1mm~ off set grind on my Manix 2. It's quite frankly inexcusable in this day in age with manufacturing tolerance pretty much hitting .002" standard.
Specially when I am holding a knife that cost me $36 versus $92, and has a better ground blade by far made of the same material (S30v, Buck vantage pro large).

Also, quite frankly saying "don't complain about anything "minor"" is going against Spyderco's own philosophy: CQI.

You have made your point perfectly Clear.. You accept low quality and craftsmanship and everyone who wants that is a whiner, SO what you are saying is if you were to order some shirts online and the pockets on the front are uneven and hanging at different heights and slightly different angles you are cool with wearing that shirt because hell it is perfectly functional.. Or better yet you Go down to the ford dealer to buy a mustang but you have to special order it since you wanted certain options. The happy day comes along when it shows up.. You go down to the dealership to pick it up and the fenders are slightly different colors, the hood is misaligned, and the headliner was glued in and smeared all over around the edges.. Hell the car is completely functional so you are a whiner if you don't like that

Frankly what I see is a guy who wants argue right or wrong.. The knife was designed symmetrically and that is what people ordered and bought. What they got is not that and it would have taken spyderco no more time to build it the right way period.. Yes it functions.. that has nothing to do with the what this thread is about

Big difference in a ~ $30,000 car and a Sub $100 knife.

If you had ever worked at a dealership and seen how some of the cars come in before they are detailed, worked on etc to get them right before they put them out on the lot........ ;)

They aren't perfect......

Anyway, back to the Sub $100 production knife that isn't up to $400+ knife standards..... Heaven forbid......

Nothing is perfect that is made by humans, there will always be something to find if one looks hard enough...

That's why there are things called tolerances and acceptable levels of finished products to a level that is set based on a variety of criteria that includes price as in price per unit.

Those levels are set by the manufacturer before the model goes into full production... That's across the board of manufactured products.

Some people will never be happy no matter what and they tend to always look for the negatives, that's just how they are, but then there is therapy and medications for those types of things..

No frankly there is no difference using the logic given.. a $100 knife is not a "cheap knife" and is is reasonable to assume you get what you pay for whether is be a $10 shirt or a $30k car.. You go ahead and wear your shirt with the uneven pockets, then everyone will know who you are

My Para 2 is perfect, My Military is perfect and am extremely happy with both.. And I expect my Manix 2 to be the same

JackalopeSTICKER,
We apologize for your disappointment. As mentioned if you will send the knife in to W&R for evaluation our crew will take a look and see what can be done. No amount of discussion here can help us help you. The Manix2 is manufactured by our crew here in Golden, CO and yes, it is made by hand by humans. Our crew strives for the best, but they are human and sometimes mistakes happen.

I just got a new Manix 2

It's beautifully made except for one thing, the saber grind is asymmetrical.

Out near the tip the bevel meets the spine about 5/32 further forward on one side.

Maybe I'm being too picky. Would this one bug you guys? Would it be covered under warranty or is it too insignificant?

Get yourself a knife grinder and grind it to how you like it. You couldn't make that knife yourself for cheaper then the price you paid.

That is a awesome reply and company attitude. Really not that disappointed with Spyderco actually, It is hard to stomach somebody telling you that you have no right to expect craftsmanship.. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yes it functions..

And you have made my point. End of story, you sending a functional knife back is a waste of everyone's time. I'm done arguing.

Cars have worse margins, far worse margins. I've worked at two dealers, they made about 1k a car and it was not uncommon at all to make a loss.
It's pretty evident too, every year quality goes down on a lot of cars.

Oh I know, sad isn't it...

They cheapen them more every model year...

Very much so however even sadder is when American based/made products cannot compete with other foreign companies who are producing American products themselves.
Even Toyota took a hit in quality, albeit their cars are at least reliable and low maintenance but the fit and finish is definitely taking hits year after year.

I blame the consumer for wanting cheaper and cheaper products. Same thing happening in the car market happened in the PC market, which has been biting them hard.

And people wonder why the companies are outsourcing....

All they want is cheaper and higher quality... But cheaper and cheaper......

There has to be a breaking point someplace that can't be crossed and I do believe most have gotten to that point...

I agree, it's the consumers that are to blame... It's the more for less attitude that is killing us here in this Country.. The consumers just don't get it and or can't put it together...

That's why threads like this one irritate me.... ;)

Back on topic.

The quality of Spyderco is excellent and IMO above the price ranges the models are in.

That's why I try to build whatever baseline I can. Comparing knives in similar price ranges and see what is acceptable and what is not.

Yes, I think you are right, you have to really look and compare I think. :)

The logic here really is not adding up. A thread bringing up a issue of lack of craftsmanship and quality control is driving companies to outsource?? Really? yea that's whats happens.

If anything it is the direct other way. People love the fact they can buy a high quality knife MADE in america. They are thinking I love the fact I can get craftsmanship and still actually get it made in America. SO they pay a couple extra dollars and buy the knife. It shows up and the blade has obvious lack of craftsmanship and quality control. SO the customer says Hey spyderco whats the deal? Can you fix this for me. I think that is the Ultimate in Quality control and Keeps Companies on their toes.. There is a reason I refuse to Buy a cold steel knife and as much as possible Made only in America Items, There is a reason I pay a couple extra dollars. And anyone who says let the craftsmanship slide since it is made in America is a confused individual
