Manix 2 -- why???

So I go to knifecenter the other day, and there it is -- the Manix 2.

First thought: YES!!! FINALLY!!! I've been waiting for this day for over a year -- and now, HERE IT IS! Ball bearing lock, just like they promised, too!!! Finally, I'll be able to replace the Manix I lost a while back -- my favorite knife ever!

Then, somewhere between my first thought and dislocating my shoulder as I lunged for my wallet, I had my second thought.

Second thought: Wait -- NO FLAT GROUND BLADE??? NOOOOOOOOOoooooooo.... That blade design was my favorite part of the Manix. This Manix 2 looks like it is basically an Endura with less tip strength, and a ball bearing lock.

Can anyone console me, or should I just order a Lum Chinese instead?

Well, you could read reviews by people who have actually used the knife and see how it performs, or you could wait for Spyderco to come out with a flat ground blade in that style which they have stated they plan on doing. Or hey, the knife is only eighty bucks. You could buy one to try out, and if you don't like it you could resell it for a small loss.

Oh thank you Jesus, thank you God.

But maybe I'll read some of those other reviews, too. :D

i also like the full flat grind, but many people prefer a saber grind.

i was hoping to win one of the ffg prototypes, but since i didn't, ill probably wait for the next sprint run.

but this knife is getting outstanding reviews so far. i am also considering buying one and having krein give it his ffg treatment.

or pay 35 bucks for a wicked krein regrind and be done with it.

Exactly. When I spoke to Tom Krein the other day he said he already had done a couple Manix 2's. I personally find that the knife cuts pretty good, and since the blade stock is thinner than the original it actually is very comparable in cutting ability. I will probably still get mine reground to a FG, but for $80 the Manix 2 is a hell of a lot of knife. It is ultra strong, cuts pretty good for such a beast, and the ergos are tremendous.

"afi" is Sal's slang for an aficionado, a knife nut. A person who can appreciate the difference between blade grinds and steels. Basically, us.

Ah, okay. Thanks for clearing that up -- I was pretty sure it had to means something like that, but didn't know what.

Okay -- I'm a happy camper once again. I know it will be a bit more expensive, but I can wait for my "afi" Manix 2. :D

Yeah, the lack of a flat-grind is also a huge turn-off to me. So far all the knives I own are hollow or flat saber-grinds. I've been waiting for a full-flat.

I want to, but I cannot get excited about the not-really-a-Manix Manix II. It looks like a fine, well-made knife, and many of the early buyers seem to like it a lot, as they usually do. However, the early reviews of the real Manix were more enthusiastic and widespread.

But it isn't a Manix.

The Manix has a big (not small) blade.
The Manix has a full flat grind (not hollow) on a big leaf blade.
The Manix has clean lines (not jimping and plastic buttons up the ying yang).
The Manix has excellent S30V steel (not pretty darn good 154CM).
The Manix has its own name (not a pretend-I'm-something-else name).

I agree.

I was excited when I saw the ‘new’ Manix for sale.
When I found out what it was all about, I realized it wasn’t really a Manix.

Same feeling when I saw the BM Presidio ‘Ultra”.

No thanks.

I can take some detailed side by side pictures of the old small and large Manixes next to the new one tonight ;)

I'll take the Manix2 as is without complaint. It's sitting in my pocket right now. For the price and features, I think it's the best bargain in the Spyderco line.

I'm carrying mine too and I agree. I own two FG old Manixes, a large black (old) and a small black (old) so I have a first hand comparison.

There is nothing wrong with the Manix 2 whatsoever ;)

It just seems to me Spyderco is trying to do something to appeal to more people than less in bringing this knife to market at this price point. I know, I know, it's hard to believe there are buyers out there other than us:rolleyes:, but I imagine they sell more sub-$100 knives than plus-$100 models. And a knife in this price range will sell better than one twice the price to the average Joe. I also think it's the average Joes buying enough knives that enables Spyderco to make knives to please the knife knuts.

Good job Spyderco:thumbup:

I was hoping for a flat grind as well, but almost ordered one anyway. Then I got to looking at the white/clearish??? plastic over the lock. That's what turned me away. I'm also not sure if it can be closed with one hand... at least as easy as a lockback.

Reeek, what do think about the plastic now that you have one in hand? ...and can it be closed with one hand at all?

I'm still on the fence and may pick one up soon.

I'm not Reeek, but I can close it single handed, with either left or right hand. No, no as easily as a lock-back, but I doubt you'd ever see this thing come undone unless you want it to . That's a good thing to me.
