Manix II CTS- XHP

The steel freaks on this forum all know BM treats their M4 to 60-62, whereas Spyderco did the Gayle Bradley at 65

IIRC, it was just the first batch of the Gayle Bradley that was at 64 rc and it was said to be a mistake. The subsequent batches were said to be at around 62 rc.

I am probably wrong though.

OK, you win. I have never used either and I'm a habitual liar. :jerk it:

I honestly have to think that if someone says xhp holds and edge similar to s30 they are lying and have never used xhp. That or I got the cream of the crop, best ever , touched bye an angel xhp manix 2 that ever rolled of the spyderco factory line. I , like many I'm sure have a ton of blades in s30 from multiple companies so I know aall of them can't be a bad batch of S30

I don't think I said xhp is the best steel. I carry around my boss street with my folder of the day cause it does what its meant to do well . What I said is it holds its workable edge leaps ahead of Spydercos cpmS30V in my uses, wich it does . I also said it holds its edge longer then my benchmade cpmm4 in my uses . I also stated that benchmades cpmm4 might not hold up as long as spydercos. I also stated what my uses with a folder are . I didn't mean to offend anyone. Havnt got a chance to try super blue yet ,if its as good as you say I will be interested to try it . I do work with some heavy rusted well water at my plant nursery. Is it true super blue will rust if you breath on it?

ridiculous.

some should keep in mind that there are different appreciation of "dull" and edge retention comparison can vary quite a bit depending on what one describe by "dull".

if for you a "dull" knife is a knive that no longer shaves, stay away from high vanadium steels, they will be harder to sharpen and won't give you anything back because they lose shaving sharpness just as fast, or faster than simpler steel at the same hardness. but once they lose it, they still do the job for some (long) time, not as well but still. a steel like xhp or zdp will stop doing the job short after losing shaving sharpness.

wich one will be better will depend on what you cut and also, and probably even more, on what you call a dull knife.

Buy dull I mean I have to slide twine across blades edge to get threw two ply twine and that I won't pop right threw.there is not a steel that gives me trouble sharpening.

I dont know man, I wouldnt get rid of that sng to pick up a sprint manix. for hard use knives which is the class both of these folders are supposed to be in, that sng trumps the manix.

I've got my Ti Tyrade for hard-use - and I'd say its probably stronger than the SNG. If its not, then my Busse Game Warden or Skeleton Warden definitely are (and I don't honestly use any of my folders for what I consider "hard use" - I go to my fixed-blades instead). That being said, I love the SNG's choil, but other than that, it just doesn't make me feel like I've got enough out of it to justify the price.

The Sprint Manix on the other hand... does just like the Ti Tyrade - delivers for the money spent.

Not knocking the SNG - I honestly like it, but I don't love it like I thought I would for the price.

Well crap - as it turns out, I just won one on ebay (was submitting a best offer and the guy took it).

I was almost leaning towards the Tan M4 model instead from the other thread.

Crap, something's got to get sold soon to pay for this though - I refuse to have a credit-card balance for toys, so the SNG might be appearing in the classifieds soon enough (if I can convince myself).

Thanks for all the input folks.

Sell your sng get a manix in s30 ,m4 and xhp . You will probably break even on money. Use these over the next couple months at let us now how you like the pros and cons of each:D. On a side note,,,,I really want one of those tkn Cpms110v cc smf !!!

I simply can't take your word because I haven't seen your version of proof yet. Can you link me?

Also, spell check please!

Getting back to the original topic..........................................

I have one, and it's quickly become my favorite EDC. The CTS-XHP cuts (reprofiles) easily, and polishes to a mirror finish EXTREMELY easily. So far, it seems to keep that edge very well. I personally like it better than S30V, but I've never liked S30V. More than anything, the knives I've owned in it just don't take the edge...for me, the way I sharpen...the way some other steels do. It's a great steel, no doubt. I just don't like it.

I personally like Elmax better...it is a LOT more difficult, for me, to polish than the CTS-XHP, but it still cuts like a frickin light saber and holds that edge very well, on my ZT0551.

That all said, the CTS-XHP is a good steel in my opinion. It's not the be all, end all, but the overall package of the Manix II, it's width (or lack thereof compared to some of my other carry knives), it's weight, how smooth it is, the design, and the blade profile and steel have made it my favorite. Although a knife is in large part the blade and the steel it's composed of, there are quite a few other factors including and in addition to the steel it's made of that make the Manix II in CTS-XHP one of, if not my favorite EDC. YMMV.

these should be all the existing versions of the manix, not my pic but from a dutch forum member r@y

Well all the plain edge variations at least. Very nice!

OK - so I was starting to wonder if maybe I wanted to trade this guy out for a Tan M4 when it got here, but the more I read up on some of the Carpenter steels (and especially CTS-XHP), the more I think I may end up keeping this guy and using him if its not too large.

I'm kind of excited to see it show up now. Is it bad that I ordered a Para 2 and before it showed up to my house, I accidentally won this one? My wife thinks so :)

For me it is pretty simple:
CTS-XHP - 3rd place on my manila rope cutting test.
CPM M4 - 12th place and it is not rust resistant.

If it i not rust resistant - it should play with guys like 52100 or 1095, and there it lose in edge holding and toughness and everything else being 10 times more expensive!

CPM M4 is good only for collection - I have one sample - I do not need for another.

Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili, when you make statements like this you should state that you mean you and your opinion. It sounds like you mean that CPM M4 is only good for collecting, not cutting. That would be too ridiculous a statement to even contemplate. I don't believe you could be that thick.

The first part doesn't make sense to me. The last part about prices. Have you bought any of the steels you mentioned and do you have any idea where CPM M4 is ten times more expensive than 52100 , or even 1095? You should do some checking.

In addition, your past statements about S30V being $2.00 a lb. Way, Waaay off! I wish. I don't know where you would get these things. If CPM M4 was 10 times the price as 52100 it would be like buying silver just about at todays prices( slight exaggeration, but not that far off). It sure wouldn't be in production blades.

All good steels BTW. Better than you give them credit for.

Joe

I have the para 2 cts 20cp on preorder and own the xhp manix . I don't see what it would be bad . The manix is a bit chunky but she ain't fat.

Also blades in m4 are easier to get then a blade in xhp . I don't know why you would want to trade away a steel so many love that isn't easy to get . Just think you can now join in one of the hottest arguments going (how great is xhp really) for me its gggggggrrreat!
