Mantis knives took care of a small town Police Department

In July of 2006 I was hired in Troy Montana as a Patrol officer after moving here blindly and living off my Military retirement and left over Tax return for a couple of months. I discovered that there was absolutely no budget to speak of for uniforms, much less accessories like knives. We were a department of only 4 officers including myself. Because of my last station in the Navy as a Security force supervisor at a 500,000 sq/ft training installation, I had a lot of experience contacting contractors for various services. I decided that we needed knives in the department and went about contacting every knife maker imaginable. It was before I was a member of any knife forum, so I didnt have the resources that I currently have.
I was contacted By none other than Mantis knives. Jared West himself contacted me. The Company was only a couple of months old at the time, but he cared enough about my Police department that he wanted to help. We were outfitted with MU-3 neck knives. Over a year later, the plastic sheath on one of our knives cracked from riding in the back pocket of one of the officers. I gave him mine which hadnt been used for much of anything. I contacted Jared and told him what had happened. He told me to send it in. Anyway after a few days, He contacted me and told me that my knife was enroute, and that I would be surprised. He sent me the Upgraded version the MU-4 picker 2, a more expensive knife. Mantis may have some off the wall designs, and they may not advertise the same as others, But I will always be a fan of their products. He took care of a small Police department, when he himself was just starting out.
Unfortunately in January of 2007 I was laid off due to the same nonexistant budget, that precluded the city from buying knives for the department in the first place. I have had the joy of being a stay at home dad for the last 17 months while my wife trained and became a 911 Dispatcher. I am still looking for employment, but the economy out here is rough. I keep on Trying though.

Thank you for your time. I needed to share that.

TROY MONTANA!!

Boy, I love that place! Back in 1983, we moved up to the Yaak valley to live with my grandmother for awhile; I went to Troy High School for the last half of my Junior year. Getting up at 4am to catch a bus at 5:30am at the ranger station was a harbinger of things to come. I walked part of the way to the bus stop, and my grandmother insisted that I carry my SchradeUSA LB7. (Boy, that was a different time!)

My grandmother knew several people in public service in Troy. I don't think the PD there in Troy has ever had much of a budget. There were only six officers in 1983, IIRC; If we had a problem up in the valley, we usually called the Libby PD, as they had the manpower to send someone up. I think the guys in the Troy PD provided most if not all of their own equipment. Big kudos to Mantis for taking care of you guys.

Sorry to hear of the layoff. (I'm a stay-at-home dad myself.) I got out of the navy in 1989, and was a week away from coming home to Libby. Had a conversation with my dad that changed all that; almost 1/3 of the people in Libby were out of work. :( Something to do with a spotted owl, but I won't get into that here.

Good luck to you sir; it's a great place to live, the hunting is awesome (or at least it was when I was there); the scenery is incredible, and the people are some of the best I ever knew. Maybe someday I'll move back there.

thx - cpr

Orca you and I have tons in common!!! I retired from the Navy in 2004. I moved out here April 2006. There are 0nly 3 Officers in Troy now. Like you said, the Sheriffs office takes care of alot of stuff since the city officers jurisdiction is pretty small (Yaak is way out of the Question.) Shoot me a pm let me know more of your contact info.

If he had contented himself with this story it would have influenced some people. It's a good story. But noooooo, he got carried away and flooded Bladeforums with spam tonight and gave himself away.

I don't think I'll post a list just yet, not until it looks like it's probably over. The posts from ragingwolf66 were only a small part of the flood so far.

It looks like all the different accounts participating are actually different people. Looks like Jared recruited a bunch of people to shill for him, and overdid it.

In respect to the forum, and the moderators, Until things have settled, I wont be posting on this topic again. Looks like I had bad timing,. Sorry folks

He also donated knives to an entire Monastery.

They called it the Praying mantis!!!

Sorry, I had to.....................................

Oh well, still brings back good memories for me - I'm glad there's still some life in those little "ghost towns" up there in the mountains.

As for the spamming, well, ragingwolf & the mods will have to work that out. (My money's on cougar. Mod's almost never lose . . . ;) )

ragingwolf - I'll pm tonight.

thx - cpr

ps -

wolf - coffee out the nose with that one - good one! :p

Piece of trash. Bad timing. I think not.
Shilling for another piece of trash is more like the actual truth here.

Why would anyone want to support a company employing those types of actions?

Honestly,
this thread wasnt a spam thread. I decided to share my experience with other knife forumites. True he took care of a small department of only four officers, instead of 500. He wasnt trying to advertise, he was trying to help out. Yes it happened at the same time that Jared sent out the email to the Militia, and yes I am a Member. The Militia is just a name given to a gropup of Mantis knife owners. I also happen to be a Striderholic, Burchtree inhabitant, Draven Industrial Army, etc. I was planning to post this anyway.
To just post derogatory comments like "Bastid" did is just out of line. Who are you calling a piece of trash??? Me??? Maybe if you had read the thread you wouldnt have posted that way.
Many of you dont like the Company, the Owner, the Product. Thats fine. Its a free world. I dont ever tell anyone they cant have an opinion. Let me ask you this though. If this thread had been about any number of other knife companies, it wouldnt have been like this..Why??? The company is just turning 2 years old and needs some exposure. What better way than to tell of some customers good experiences with people that understand...members of forums...
I am proud to be a member of BladeForums, as well as other forums. I never imagined a reaction like what I have seen.

Yup I read,

It must just be luck that you started this after his call to spam forums.

Yup just a coincidence. Right. Sure I believe you. You ignored his call to spam the forums and just came here to post what you posted and it was not related to his request at all.

How stupid do you think we are?

Let me ask you this though. If this thread had been about any number of other knife companies, it wouldnt have been like this..Why??? The company is just turning 2 years old and needs some exposure. Oh please,
This clown asked people to go out and spam forums. That is what you did. That is why. Should not be to hard for a reasonable knife person who knows the knife community as well as you claim to know it to figure out.

Since when would the knife community put up with that type of behavior?

Enough of your wining and excuses. This is B.S. and you know it.

I have a question.

Why would you support that type of behavior by a knife company? (Oh, I think I know - to get a free knife.)

If you need a knife that bad, just ask me. I will be glad to give you one that is made by a reputable company that you can be proud of.

I am sorry. I truly didnt think a thread about my personal experience with a company would blow up in my face the way it did. I also understand that spamming is a big no no. But I did Post after receiving an email from Mantis. I may have exercised poor judgement by Posting when I did. I apologize for any offense taken by the forum, and Moderators. I didnt do it for a free knife. I did it because Jared asked me to share my experience. He helped me out once, I only thought it right to do the same.

The apology I can accept sincerely.
The lame excuses that proceeded it are total B.S.

2 years in business so he deserves the spam. No Way.

Just coincidence he shared his experience on JD, too.....

Copy and paste post, as well...

Not a coincidence at all. I am a member there as well. Check my post count. Perhaps you are implying I lied about my experience? I didnt. I just used poor Judgement posting about it when I did.

I think we can let this one die. It has run it's course.
I applaud Mantis for providing ragingwolf's department with knives.

I despise Mantis for asking customers to spam.
That was poor judgment. Very poor and in the knife world I have know for over 30 years that type of stuff is only going to do his company harm in the long run. There is plenty of factual history to back that up. He may see a flash in the pan from this effort (suckers are born every minute), but sticking with this on a long term basis will not fare well.

Friends of Jared should tell him for his own good to call it off before the harm is widespread.

Even now at best, he needs to check in to those forums and own up to this crap if he wants the business of serious knife people. At this point I would rather sharpen a rock and carry it than own one of those knives.

Mantis also donated knives to my Gerbil Ranch...

Gerbil Ranching has become huge since Richard Gere has been how shall we say this..."inserted himself" into our tight little industry..

Mantis knives are the knives we use at harvest time to make all of the Gerbil fur products that people demand...Way to Go Mantis!!!
