Mark Terrell Trouble

Given in the mean time between giving him $400 and now having lost my job, and could really need that money, a drive to Texas wouldn't be out of the question...

To check in, still nothing.

Subscribing to this in hopes of seeing someone post about how they tracked him down, knocked on his door, and got their money back.

I did the logo he was using on his website and knives for a while. I had designed a new website for him. I was doing it in trade for a custom knife I designed and one of his "production" knives. Based on his lack of communication and a general bad vibe I was getting, I stopped working on it.

I'd love to read about everyone getting either their product or money, but it looks pretty grim at this point. Sorry to read he made off with what sounds like at least a few thousand dollars of people's money.

I see he's been banned from this site... I'm guessing this is the reason why.

Someone else mentioned "the green forum". What is that?

Spoke with Mark... He told me he is out of the knife business and he'll try to make our deal right. I mentioned to him that there's a lot of angry people out a lot of money, he said to leave a voicemail or text him with your name, number, and what your order is... I'll update if I hear more.

Did anything come of this?

His rating is an F with the BBB. I'm glad he is out of business and hope he will never be in business again. Everyone should remember this guy and me day he will get scammed like he scammed everyone on this post.

If you see this thief, report him here so everyone can bash him out of business again.

I don't understand something. Why do folks send in money before the knife is ready for shipment? Whenever I sell a knife to a customer, I send him an email with pictures and tell him it's ready to ship pursuant to payment. It's usually paid with paypal and I ship the same day I get the funds. I also tell him he has 5 days to cancel the buy no questions asked, after that, it's considered a done deal. I have never talked to a maker who asks for the money up front. Guess there are some, judging by this thread, but it's not a normal way of doing business here, I don't believe.

I would agree that it sounds out of the norm for a guy who's made it his business, and it's not just a limited run type project where he's gathering interest and accepting advanced payments to fund the project materials.

It's pretty normal on a prop forum I'm on, but that's because the people making the items are doing it on the side. Again, they're using the advanced payment to buy supplies that they just don't normally keep a stock of. However, I've seen the same thing happen there. I got jammed out of about >$100 pre-buying something. I wrote it off as a lesson learned with a hint of hope the guy will eventually make good.

As far as I'm concerned it's always a "buyer beware" market when it's being done through forums, especially when there's not a clear rating system in place so you know if the person is a reliable seller with a good reputation.

Problem is, the guy can start out good, build up a good reputation and following and then just crash and burn.

I understand. I just hate to see people get taken like this; some of these guys got taken for serious money. Most makers will not ask for payment until the knife is done and ready to ship. He should be able and willing to provide pictures too.

I'm pretty sure people that weren't buying from him knew his payment practices and nobody raised any flags about it prior to hosing people.

If it was that unusual of a practice I would think someone on this forum or the green forum would have alerted people to the high probability of eventually getting the shaft.

Mark Terrell was hot stuff at one time. Exotic designs, real craftsmanship, and a busy hosted forum here. Whatever personal problems or mistakes took him down, no one should have bought from him after that.

Curious if members on the Green Forum were having similar problems at the same time and if he was banned from there around the same time as here or if he burned people on one forum and then moved on to the next one.

He made some really sweet WSK's. I almost pulled the trigger on one years ago.

Just saw this thread again while perusing the forum. I bought a Crowd Pleaser from Mark a few years ago. It was supposed to come with a sheath and the micarta panels were all chewed up and chipped. I initially tried to arrange for repair of the panels, then asked for a refund but he didn't respond to any of my emails. Not exactly stellar customer service for a $700 knife. After I did a charge back 60 days later, all of a sudden he started emailing me asking for his money back. Told him to fix it and then he'd get paid. Never heard from him again.
