Martial Arts question

Fighting, for the most part, is not worth it. With that said, if you have to fight then damn sure disable your attacker with any and all means possible. There is no such thing as dirty fighting.

Yep.

Bas Rutten is not the one you want TO F. WITH!. ;)

I would look into your current laws before practicing what he preaches though, where i am you better have a damn good reason to do 70% of what he recommends to do.
On the other hand prison?...death?..... i prefer living at this point.

An acquaintance of mine is in bad condition currently within a hospital, after he and another ended up getting jumped by a group of guys after a wedding reception. One or so punches to the head now his brain is swelling.
So their you go, first punch taken can be your last one taken. This isn't no movie.

Not entering in this debate, because I lack any kind of knowledge to back up my mouth, but Boats' point is what I thought about BJJ and a few others, and it seemed to me that while they are excellent arts in their own right, I am terrified of getting caught on the ground. If nothing else it would slow the process of getting the hell out of there.

Remember the point is to defend yourself/family and get the hell out of there.

Like I said before If your gonna be a fighter you need ground and striking. Most fights will stand up less than a minute then always end up on the ground if you don't get knocked out. Most street fight don't last more than 2 minutes. If anyone saw one it must have been awesome. But your not training to be a fighter. Getting in shape and having fun in a good gym doesn't matter what you take. fwiw I love my Glocks. :)

I have never been involved with CQB handgun training, I saw this video awhile back and thought it had some solid techniques within regard to knife and baton, which i have had experience with. So is their anyone on here that has any wisdom to draw from in regards to pistol training in such a manner...is this applicable or BS hype???

Funny if someone comes at me with a knife I would step back then shoot them not go towards them then shoot them?? Guess i haven't had the proper training. :)

It's applicable in the context of the set-ups he presents them in, i.e. full light, no competing distractions, and with full knowledge that a brandishing charging attacker is coming while the instructor draws with no covering garment or thumb break on his holster, but I digress.

A knowledgeable knife wielder is going to try his hardest to set up circumstances favorable to his weapon. A head on brandishing charge in broad daylight against an open carrier is not that circumstance. Dealing with a close ambush from behind would be far more realistic, but students won't be wowed by a gun guru getting routinely "killed" by an expert using a different weapon with its best tactics put to good use and its limitations minimized via smarter deployment.

Well I love 1911's, the idea of going to see Harry Potter with my 12 year old armed.... well, I am hoping that isn't neccessary. And shooting every asshole we meet, well.... this forum would be awful quiet after all the suicides :D

I completely agree thou, if you have no other opinion, take a step back and draw your supersoaker or real gun if you don't own a glock.

One thing I did notice about Aikido over a lot of the other styles is just how much floor space in needed for a lot of the moves. I mean a LOT. Seems a bit... less then useful in a real world practice. However the joint locks and such looks very useful.

I did find another Dojo, within walking distance of my house. The instructor there is practicing a style of his own creation, but watching for a few minutes, it impressed me as a cross between Bruce Lee and David Lee Roth... :/ Might check it out only because it is so close to my house..... beside maybe if I get into a fight, women will throw their panties at me....

I have learned you can't armchair quarterback anything. Unless you are the one in the fray, then saying someone should have done this or that is all just bullshit in my opinion.

In real life, it is done less beautifully and with far less room required.
Room is required for PRACTICE so you don't break each other's joints or go head-first into a sharp corner.
It's a great adjunct to a striking art.

Value point, except. well... you like glocks. :D

Ok, I guess I wasn't clear about my intentions. I alway walk/run away from a fight unless I have no choice (i.e. cant get away or a family member is in danger of harm). Not what I was talking about. I looked up Aikido on the web, and I am trying to understand the style verses other I have seen and I can't quite picture it. But two of my co worker both study it (different schools) and I was talking to one about fitness, and different styles of Martial Arts. His Dojo is offering a beginners class, and he offered to pay for it for me, if I would like to give it a try. 16 weeks of free training. And I was just wondering what I might expect for styles, etc.

Oh and FYI, I trust the guy offering, it won't be a "kick the crap out of the newbie" class or anything like that.

All martial arts boil down to a very few basic themes, control of a centerline, creating angles, and achieving these objectives with footwork, various blocks, holds, throws, strikes and counters. Some styles emphasize striking like Tae Kwon Do. Some emphasize grappling like Jiujitsu and Wrestling. There is also now a resurging intrest in so called "Western" Martial Arts as typified by old Fight Books like 1:33 and written by Masters like Liechtenauer and Fiore to name two. Interestingly, the Eastern (Asian) Martial Arts had nothing on those developed in the Western Civilizations in any technique from Grappling to striking to various weapons techniques and styles.

While I do like Glocks, the only reason I harp on "Glocks" is because they have such a cult following. In all seriousness, I say shoot what you like although I have seen Glocks go through some pretty good torture where other weapons failed. All that is beside the point though - Same as this crazy ass thread (as are most all martial arts threads). While I think there has been some sound advice given, a lot of it goes back to the Glock or 1911 cultist that thinks their way is the only way. Typical threads go "Well I would have just shot his ass", or "he was holding the knife wrong", or "he should have "gotten on the inside more" or other such Monday morning quarterback bullshit. Like I said, I call bullshit on most all of this unless it's actually you in the fray. When it comes to "fighting" threads, I think our off-topic threads with pics of women have much more validity to them.

Exactly, when it comes to styles of martial art, one is pretty much as good as another for most peoples purposes. However, if one looks at the MMA fighters, the most dominant APPEAR to have superior grappling skills rather than superior striking skills. But you're right, Glock, 1911, I prefer H&K USP Tactical in .45 ACP, it's FAAAAR superior to the Glock:D
