Maxpedition Bottle holder kit, review and pics

Thanks mtwarden. I just ordered four 3"TacTies.
I agree I should be able to make my own shoulder strap - I would also enjoy it better since would be designed to my specifications. My problem: can't find a place that carries what I need.
Do you know of any on-line store that has "appropriate (1.5"-2") width/length nylon strapping, a few plastic clips and a couple of adjusting sliders" that would help one make it's own sholder strap? I was checking with some local sporting goods stores in my area (SoCal), but nothing of real use to me yet....

Try strapworks.com. They have everything you're looking for and don't require huge orders.

These bottle holder kits are absolutley awesome, thanks to everyone who posted up theirs in this thread, I stole plenty of ideas putting mine together :D. I know it's a bit of a necro, but I finally got around to taking pics of it tonight. Apologies for the crappy phone pics, I've lost the cord and software CD for my camera, and the lighting wasn't great.

The setup is:

Maxped 10x4 bottle holder in OD
Tactical Tailor E+E Vertical pouch in multicam
Tactical Tailor Double mag pouch in black
Maxped large Tactile pouch in khaki
The strap is an old guitar strap I had lying around rigged on with a carabiner and some paracord(because I couldn't find two carabiners).

Front view of the setup:

Top view of the setup:

Contents of the main bottle pouch:
Nalgene Guyot 38oz SS bottle
GSI bottle cup
Ghetto stove made from a tuna can, uses solid fuel tablets
6x Coghlans fuel tabs
Bandana
Little baggie with two teabags and two sugar packets
bottlekitpocketcontents.jpg

Front pocket of the bottle holder open
bottlekitfrontopen.jpg

Contents of the front pocket. I swapped out the stock zipper pull with some gutted orange paracord and a zipper pull whistle:
Basic FAK(various bandaids, antibiotic ointment, Benadryl, Tylenol Extra Strength, some 2x3 guaze pads, wound closure strips). Nothing crazy, just a booboo kit.
LMF Spork
Rite in the Rain notepad
Pencil
Two instant handwarmers
Pen flare launcher
2x red pen flares and 1x bear banger contained in the tube to the left of them

Tactical Tailor E+E pouch open

E+E Pouch contents:
-AMK Heatsheat
-Water purification tablets(I think 20 or so)
-Signal mirror
-Fresnel lens
-ESEE survival card
-Whistle
-Button compass
-Hunk of fatwood
-2x PJCB firestraws
-Roll of duct tape
-2x rolls of gauze
-GG misch metal rod wrapped with orange paracord to make a handle and lanyard for GG striker(paracord was epoxied in place)
-Mini Bic
-Hank of paracord

TT double mag pouch open. This pouch is the "sustainment pouch". It works great for energy bars, bags of trail mix, etc. Really quite a handy pouch. This pic also gives a good view of the Spyderco Bill Moran and Gerber light attached to the tactile pouch, as well as the cord lock light.
magpouchopen.jpg

Double mag pouch contents:
-Big bag of almonds just to show what it can fit. It'll fit 6 Clif bars really well, I just didn't have that many handy. You could still fit stuff underneath the almond bag as well, the velcro closure flap works really well to secure stuff of different heights.
-2x Nalgene snap cap containers, filled with either Gatorade or Tang drink powder. There are two elastic loops on the front of the pouch designed for 12g shells. These work really well with these small containers.
-Black Crater cordlock LED light. There's a shock cord system to tighten up the pouch, and I replaced the regular cord lock with the LED one.

Maxped Tactile pouch open. I didn't have this on it originally, but I had it laying around doing nothing, and I got to thinking. It's attached to the back of the bottle holder(or the bottle holder is attached to the front of this pouch...). Works great as a general purpose or admin type pouch. I attached a Spyder Bill Moran drop point behind the double mag pouch to the molle webbing using paracord. There's also a little 1xAA Gerber light rigged onto the molle on the side of the pouch as well.

Tactile pouch contents:
-Pocket chainsaw
-Roll of orange flagging tape
-Hank of paracord
-Contractor garbage bag
-Travelpack of Kleenex
-Petzl Tikka XP 2 headlamp
-Spyderco Bill Moran
-Gerber 1xAA light
-2x handwarmer packets
(tha'ts just a deck of cards underneath the pouch I used to keep it from falling over)

Combined with a solid knife on my belt(BK-2 right now), and an SAK and a good flashlight(Olight T-25) in my pocket, it makes for a great setup for day hikes. With a full bottle of water, and two Clif Bars(not almonds), the kit weights just under 8.5lbs. If I need to carry more food or water, or extra layers, I can throw the whole setup in a backpack, or wear the backpack over the shoulder strap, which works really well. All in all I'm super happy with this setup. Any suggestions or (constructive)criticisms are more than welcome.

Nice setup and the guitar strap idea is great! This is one thread you'll get little guff over for resurrecting it. These kits are the bomb!

I usually carry a 64 oz Kleen Kanteen in my setup. Yesterday I picked up two 27oz Kleen Kanteens. They fit side bye side in the Tad Round Pouch and I'll run a single Tad Recon Pouch, Tad GPP2 or Kifaru G1 2QT on the front. Water in one KK and tea or cocoa in the other.

The easy way to deal with that is to buy a universal memory card reader. It's cheap and a useful thing to have.

Thanks man. I was originally gonna use the strap off an Adidas gym bag, but it wasn't nearly long enough. This one is plenty long, still with some space to lengthen it. It's decently comfy, but I do wanna get a strap pad for it.

Nice idea running two bottles. Those TAD pouches are pretty sweet.

i love almonds!

Me too, but these ones are unroasted and unsalted, so they get boring pretty quick.

Awesome, thanks for the tip. I contacted the camera company about getting another of each, but haven't gotten around to actually getting a set. Guess I can just do this instead:thumbup:

Wow 6shooter, you got a lot of good stuff in that set-up.

Thanks man. It takes care of pretty much anything I need for a dayhikes, and would keep me in pretty good shape if I had to spend a night or two in the bush.

well, i picked up a tan 10x4 today from the fine lads at DS TACTICAL here in New West BC CANADA.

took it home, and played with it for 5 hours or so, trying out different gear combos, and knives strapped to it.

I used a camera strap to sling it over my beer frame.

not feeling the love for the 10x4 yet. I thought i would be all over this one like i am when there is a case of Lucky Lager around, but i'm not keen on how the carrier rides at my side. Nor am i keen about that black steel clip, why the HEY did Maxped put it in such a wrong location? It should be on the SIDE, so i can clip my keys to it properly, but its right at the back where it rubs my side.

time will tell, I may be offering this one up for grabs soon......we'll see....

I wear mine so that the clip is at belt level. I then clip it to my 5 o'clock belt loop. This keeps it from swinging down in front of me while bending or what have you. I am a big guy, this works for me.

Someone else mentioned having trouble getting their cup out of the bottom. I spread out a bandana and place the cup on the center of it, then fold it up so that you put the corners in the cup. Push it to bottom of bag and put the bottle down in it. The bottle will slide out and when you need the cup, reach in and grab the bandana and use it to pull it out.
I think I read these on here but don't remember what page.

LMT66, can you post a pic of your set up with the 2 bottles side by side
please:D even pretty please lol.

In another post I told ya I had gotten a 64 oz, also, I ordered a 12 x 5 it should be here this week and am looking forward to seeing how that 2 qt. steel canteen works in it.
I am interested in seeing that 2 bottle set up though.

Thanks,

Bryan

Ask and ye shall receive! I'll add some other ones also.

Side by side 27oz KK's. Tight fit but works. If I move one of the side Recon Pouches to the front, or remove both side Recon Pouches and run a single Kifaru 2Qt or Tad OPP1 on the front, it would loosen up the tight fit for the bottles.

TadRoundPouch004.jpg

64 Oz KK inside and twin 27Oz KK's in a Tad RDDP1 Dump Pouch. The RDDP2 would offer a little more wiggle room.

Dump pouch with a 48Oz Nalgene inside.

Other bottles and things that all fit. As I stated in the past, my goal was one Bottle Pouch that will fit any bottle commonly used.

64 Oz KK inside pouch and on far right. Guyot wearing a fuel can hat.

Figure I should post mine here. I have attached the shoulder strap from my Wilderness Holster (very nice strap). The 10x4 is expensive, but it is well made and one of the only ways to carry a water bottle on the outside of my pack. It's insulated, allows extra stuff to also be carried in it, and has a nice big front pocket for snacks or a kit. Inside is a Maxpedition Tactical Can Case, which serves no purpose in life (especially for its price) unless you put a kit in it an sink it to the bottom of a 10x4. On top of that goes the GSI Bottle Cup, I've used a slightly smaller version of this cup for the past 10 years and have been more than pleased with it. This Bottle Cup version is about 1/4" bigger in diameter and allows a Guyot or Nalgene to fit inside it. The Guyot itself (actually a rebranded Nalgene Guyot which were $15 at Dick's a few months back) is the perfect water bottle for me. It is stainless, has cut threads, an awesome removeable lid, and is the perfect 40 oz. (advertised as 32 oz.) for me. I have some 5" Maxpedition TacTies on the back which work well for a belt loop for my hiking backpack waist belt. I just found out I can put my Taurus TCP .380 in the front pocket with room to spare! I put some stuff in my kit, most of it is recognizable except for perhaps the Frontier Straw which is a very simple water filter with no moving parts.

The above mini-review was from last year. I have since been carrying my 10x4 on the side of my Falcon II at college (Engineering night school) and love it. The Guyot is so big, it takes several days for me to have to fill it again. It is the ONLY body I've had that doesn't develop mold over time!

I have a 10x4, maybe i'll get a 12x5..

What is the cheaper knock-off version of the Maxpedition Water holder...
like a condor pouch or something that are almost exactly similar to the max one but maybe a lil less strong ?

here's something I have been trying to solve.

I want to make a maxp bottle holder kit with a cocoon pouch and waistpack for a light kit that i can attach onto my larger kit for longer outings.

I already have a maxp jumbo...aren't they the same things. one is a bottle holder with pouches attached and the other is a pouch with a bottle holder attached. should i build one or should i have what i already.

the only difference is the bottle holder kit could be attached onto my 3day pack instead of dropped inside.

what do you think.

can anyone help... trying to find the largest capacity nesting cup that can fit in these holders...something that i can cook meals in as well
