May replace my Sebbie as EDC...

Speaking of knives that replace others, I applied for the wait list for an EK&T Companion this morning. I get the feeling I'm going to like this enough that it's going to seriously change my EDC system.

Beautiful knives, those Companions. The handle length at 3.125" is way too short for me, but they're wonderful little knives nonetheless. Still, you may want to consider the minimum handle length you're comfortable with on your folders before you make a final decision. And that brings up the obvious advantage folders have over fixed-blades . . . you can carry a lot more knife in a folder for the same amount of space it takes to carry a fixed-blade. That's why I, for one, have never gone with the notion of carrying a pocketable fixed-blade.

bld, who's your avatar? Also, how do you carry your sebenza usually? Trying to think which pocket I could devote to my knife...keys in front right, cell phone in left, wallet in back right. Don't want to sit on my Ritter...may just stick with the clip for a while. Way overthinking this [emoji16]

The avatar is David McCallum (who plays the role of Dr. Donald Mallard in NCIS) from an episode of Outer Limits. And I carry my Sebenza the same way I carry all of my folders . . . clipless in my LFP. So how did I make room for it? I took my pocket tablet (also known as my SmartPhone) out of my pocket and stuck it on my belt in a holster. That worked out really well for me. Seems as if I need to get to my cell phone far more often than I do my knife. I can also hear it ring better when it's not in my pocket. And unlike my EDC, nobody seems to mind that I've got a cell phone on me that's visible for all to see. Go figure! ;)

Yep. I actually dedicate a pocket to EDC carry . . . my left (weak side) front pocket, to be precise. That way I don't have to worry about my EDC getting scratched up. And I never use a pocket sheath. There's no reason to do that when my entire pocket IS a sheath. I also feel more secure with my knife deep inside my pocket. There's no clip for something to snag on and pull my knife out of my pocket without my knowledge. (If you don't think that happens, do a search.) Last but not least, if I don't have a folder clipped to my pocket, I'm not advertising that I'm carrying a knife. And that's exactly what I'm looking for. Nobody needs to know I've got a knife on me but me.

Having said all that, there are legitimate reasons for carrying a knife clipped to your pocket. It's just that none of those reasons outweigh the reasons I don't do that. YMMV, of course.

I guess living in Utah has spoiled me, ha ha. Seeing a knife in someone's pocket doesn't really frighten or surprise anyone around here. Not sure if that's your concern or not, I just tend to forget that in some areas "knife people" are big mean and scary!

Yep. There are sheeple all around me here in LaLa land. But that's not really the issue. Even if I lived where you live, I don't think I'd use a clip. Other than being able to get to my knife in a hurry if I need to . . . and I haven't needed to yet . . . I'm not really sure what else a clip is good for besides getting my knife caught on stuff. And for me at least, the difference in ergos with a clip on or off is really noticeable. I realize I'm in the minority here. But for the life of me, I don't know why.

The Ritter Mini Grip is one I've said a few times on here I could carry for a decade straight and be just fine. I don't know what's up with the M390 versions that look like they have overground blades compared to the S30V...not a fan of that.

On clips, yes you'd be surprised how many knives feel so much more awesome without a clip. This includes CRKs, Hinderers, Spydercos, and Benchmades. Some tiny knives it's helpful to have a clip for grip when opening. I've been going clipless for a few months and haven't looked back..yet. Mine go in my pocket divider I made which also houses my EDC light and Leatherman Juice S2 so everything sits nice and vertical.

As much as I'd like to be a one knife guy, part of the fun of knives is the variety and I still like my Delica and 940 and others on occasion. You get that honeymoon feeling again when it's been a few months since carrying it daily. I enjoy carrying my CRKs, but I also enjoy my Spydercos and Benchmades especially the Ritter Mini Grip...an excellent knife. I've not so much focused on trying to find THE knife to make me sell everything else, stop buying, and EDC it for 50 years (my recent small micarta Insingo would be that one), but settling on an acceptable number of knives to fit every role and offer diverse design and materials.

On that I have to concur. I've got one knife I've left the clip on for that very reason . . . a Kizer Tomcat Splinter. It's not that the knife is tiny, it's that it's an extremely narrow framelock and without the clip, it's almost impossible to keep from putting finger pressure on the lockbar. That, of course, makes it difficult to open even though it's a bearing flipper. Fortunately, the clip on the Splinter sits very close to the frame, so it really doesn't get in my way. Here's a borrowed pic so you can see what I'm talking about:

One of the things that drives me crazy is when a manufacturer uses the clip as a LBS. I've never bent the lockbar on a Ti framelock that didn't have a LBS, so I just basically disregard their warnings against removing the clips and take them off anyway.

As funny as it may sound...even though I live in Utah I am still sort of freaked out about being caught and hit with a "concealed weapon" offense. There isn't really a law/code here in Utah for knives, just for "deadly weapons" which is pretty vague...Every police officer I have talked to has told me different things regarding the law...I don't think anyone really knows what they are here lol.

That being said, my interactions with law enforcement are few and far between, maybe i'll remove some clips and give it a shot!

The 707 Sequel is one that comes to mind immediately. I also had to focus a little more when I first took the clip off my plain jane small 21. Opening and especially closing was a bit trickier. It's all good now though. Also, a 3" XM-18 feels so much better without a clip, but I kinda got my finger in the way of closing it once since it makes the feel of the knife totally different. Luckily that one was dull enough it didn't even scratch me.

The issue I have with my 707 Sequel and my Small 21s is handle length. If the handle is long enough . . . at least 4" in my case . . . whether or not a folder has a clip doesn't seem to make that much difference in terms of my ability to control it comfortably. That's why, with few exceptions, I generally don't buy knives with less than 4" handles.

I live in SoCal as well, never had any issue with anybody questioning me about my knife clipped to my pocket. But I can see in the future, as my family grows, kids go to school, childrens sports, etc, wanting to have my knife hidden in my pocket instead of being the dad that carries a large visible knife to tee ball!

Also I did manage to cut my pinkie pretty nicely flicking my Ritter closed because I'm so used to carrying my large 21 that I have to be more careful with finger placement. Hopefully not going to make that mistake again!

This one kicked out my Small Seb Insingo.... for now. And I agree that the mini grip is a great EDC.

Love my Mini Griptilian. Wasn't a fan of the factory scales so I had a set of custom G10 scales made for it. Man, what a difference!!!! This thing feels much better in hand! And the scales are perfectly fitted.

Those scales look great!

I've thought about replacing the scales on my Mini-Grip. But one of the things I like about the stock scales is how light they make the knife. At 2.81 ounces, the Mini-Grip with factory scales carries like a dream. :)

Wow those scales are awesome! Anybody know where to get some solid CF scales for mini grip? I've been searching. Can't imagine those contributing too much weight to the mini grip...

I tried some micarta scales made by someone here on my Ritter Mini, and although the fit and finish were great, I just found them too slick and sold them. Though the plastic scales aren't pretty, they do the one thing they're advertised to do, and that's provide a good grip. Not to mention very lightweight and I could care less if they take a beating.
