MBK EWC

Interesting, looking at my EWC, the detent ball on mine does not come into contact with the jimping like it does in the Comprehensivist's post. That must be slightly out of tolerance there. Mine is perfectly smooth.

I have enjoyed it quite a bit since buying. Really, the only fault I have is that the blade looses centering and gets side to side play after handling/toying with the flipping action for awhile. A slight turn with a torx bit gets it back into shape. I tried blue loctite, but it still worked itself loose after enough flipping. And this action BEGS to be flipped casually.

It’s interesting to read of these different reports. I also have no detent ball contact with the blade jimping. Additionally I have no issues with blade centering.

Aside a slightly off-center pocket clip, the only serious issue I have had is it was too easy to close. I managed to do it several times while penetrating something and turning the blade causing a twisting that easily closed the blade. (Coring the root end of a large onion.) It’s been a disturbing safety issue.

After seeing Phil’s disassembly photo essay I took mine apart and bent the spring leaf farther inward causing greater pressure on the blade. That tightened it up for me satisfactorily.

Love mine, been carrying and using it nonstop since it released. I ended up fully contouring the scales on mine, and feel like this mod really takes the feel in hand to another level. Also smoothed out the jimping considerably, and this explains (probably) why I also haven't experienced the grittiness which Comprehensivist so eloquently illustrated.

Now that's what i'm talking about!

Why? Why this topic?
I didn’t know about this knife and now I kinda want one :):):)

How is the detent? Specifically wondering if anyone has dropped it into their pocket and not used the clip? Will it stay closed?
Been thinking about this knife for a couple weeks now... willpower is definitely a finite resource.

On mine and all the other ones I handled at Blade Show last weekend, the detents were very stout. I wouldn’t worry about dropping it in the pocket at all.

I don’t normally use the clip. It stays loose in my pocket most days. It’s never opened.

Yep, that's definitely on the money. Thanks for the thorough discussion and pics! MBK has been really great about responding to constructive design criticism and I think they will welcome this info when considering changes to make to future runs.

I had an issue with a Minpin and Sanford made sure it was taken care of in a timely manner. He stands behind his products.

This is the first knife I have purchased from Monterey Bay Knives. After I made my post above on the previous page, I sent an e-mail to Sanford Owen as a courtesy notice with a link to this thread to alert him that I had posted mostly positive comments about the EWC along with a couple observations to consider as possible CQI opportunities. He replied in less than 30 minutes. While I am not in the habit of publicly posting personal e-mail replies from others, I am going to make an exception here because it demonstrates the high quality of his character and his serious concern for customer satisfaction. Here is his reply:

"Hey Phil!

Thank you very much for linking me to the Bladeforums post and the detailed overview. It really helps having an outside opinion and allows me to grow from here as a producer of knives, and allows me to correct/perfect the process. I strive to make the best knife I possibly can within the budget set for the project. Any and all criticism is welcome and greatly appreciated as long as it's constructive and helps me progress.

I'll review this with Ray, and see how we can do better.

Best,

Sanford Owen"

That's the kind of person and company I want to do business with. I will surely be buying more products from them.

Great job on the knife mods! I am a firm believer in modifying favorite user knives to correct any small feature(s) that detract from my ergonomic bliss. I do my mods the old-fashioned way with files & sandpaper to take the process slowly so that I don't have regrets later because I got too aggressive with power equipment. You are obviously more skilled with power tools than I given the awesome results you achieved.

I may follow suit later with contouring the scales to some extent, but the knife is still too new to me to know how I want to proceed (or not.)

The detent ball contact with the center tooth I experienced is only noticeable on veeery slow manual closing. It is not noticeable at all upon opening or normal closing at speed. After I finished putting a tiny polished radius on the inner edges of the scales and a similar treatment on the edges of the jimping, I cleaned, re-lubed, and reassembled the knife. It operates extremely smoothly now.

In closing I want to confirm that I am very satisfied with this knife. I have no problem recommending it to anyone who asks.

Thanks,

Phil

I really need to stop looking in here...
OK, so mine came in yesterday, and I am quite smitten.

Right off the rip I struggled finding the right "flip-close" technique right handed, and decided to try left handed (I absolutely suck at doing things left handed) - instant 100%. Eventually my right hand figured it out, but that was really weird for a time being able to do something left handed that I couldn't do right handed (very well).

Sandford, if you are seeing this, I for one would absolutely INSTA-BUY one of these scaled up to 3.5 - 3.7 inches. I really love this concept and MBK's stellar execution. I will be leaving the crisp edges on the scales. I may gently dehorn the blade tang eventually, but for now I'm leaving it as is. Doesn't even need a Wicked Edge ride - sharp as hell out of the pouch. Bravo to you guys for bringing something fresh and unique to us knife-addicts.

All your great pics and positive feedback on this knife and the customer service of MBK has got me to order one.

Looks like a fun design!

A lot of stress around the world these days. Here's a little feel good anecdote to hopefully add some balance to the big picture:

I read this thread recently and it inspired me to start the hunt for an EWC. I have been a fan of & purchaser of Ray Laconico knives since well before the Jasmines even existed. I have owned several Jasmines & several of Ray's earlier knives also in the past that I purchased directly from Ray.

Back to my point ;-) After looking everywhere I could think of to locate an EWC I came up without any leads. So I decided to contact Sanford at MBK to inquire as to whether or not any EWC folders would be in stock sometime soon. Sanford very promptly replied to my inquiry & said that he expected some soon, but that he also had one EWC in his possession with a couple of very light carry marks and he was willing to let me purchase the one he had at a great price. I said heck yeah! I'll take it! Sanford then wrote back & said in order to make up for the light carry marks would I like for him to install & include a timascus pocket clip at no extra charge. Well I said not just yes, but hell yes!

This was my 1st communication with Sanford & in my opinion his communication style is just as stand-up & top shelf as my communications with Ray have always been. Ray & Sanford make a great team there at Monterey Bay Knives imho. Sanford really tipped the scales of good will in my direction with this EWC I now own.

Well here it is, and fwiw, I have yet to see any light handling marks anywhere on this one (that is oil on the flipper part of blade in photo). I really like the EWC model and the timascus pocket clip, although the standard clips look good to me also.

FYI: the EWC model with standard clip as of this writing is now back in stock at MBK. Good hunting fellow blade enthusiasts!
