pictured is a crusader forge that has the bevel transformed to a true mirror edge. this requires several phases of sharpening & no small amount of effort. i think it's a wonderful edge for one's knife; not only fantastic looking but your cutting ability is a thing of sensual ecastacy.this work is that of knifenut 1013.

A mirror edge is a true thing of beauty. Hopefully some day I'll be able to do that, going to start learning in a few days.

I'm sure it splits hair no problem, it most likely whittles hair. You should take a picture of that. :)

Looks good. Here's one I did up yesterday:

I brought the convex polish all the way up the tip of the grind. This was done with an 8k waterstone and 100k diamond powder.

Polished edges are by far the most satisfying to cut with.

Very nice indeed gentlemen, kudos to you all.
I've sent off a few knives to a fellow forum member for a similar treatment, I'm anxiously awaiting the results. :D

You guys ever cut poly or nylon rope with a heavily polished edge like that? Never brought one up to that level of polish and was wondering if at somepoint it actually cut non abrasive stuff better than a rough or serrated edge at some point? Only thing I ever polished and liked the result on that type of material was an SE Tasman salt and my old collins axe

That Tanto blade is amazing looking

I've cut the hard yellow poly rope with a Bear MGC damascus bali. It was kind of an emergency. I flipped open the knife, swung at the rope and it parted. I didnt even feel it, and thought I'd missed. But, it got me and 900 pounds of concrete cylinders untangled standing on the edge of a building. Polished edges for me ever since, though whittling hair with a 220 grit waterstone finish is it's own form of enjoyment.

Thanks! Going to be spending some quality time with the stones this weekend!

Dennis, glad you like it :)

EricV, as you progress to finer and finer grits the edge becomes progressively thinner/sharper. The style or technique of the cut must change as you get to these levels otherwise you'll get the impression that the edge is becoming duller. If you were to cut rope with a edge finished on a 320 grit stone it would require a sawing motion to complete the cut, if you took the same knife with a polish and attempted the same cut with the same technique the knife would just glide on the surface. Now if you changed the technique to a direct push cut the edge would then slide through the rope like a hot knife through butter. A polished also has the advantage when doing free hanging rope cuts. It depends a lot on the steel but most edges cut best when they are very sharp and refined.

Sounds similar to what I had problems with last I tried, figure I didn't go to a high enough grit, and was attempting a standard draw cut. Definitely will be going to a higher grit now and will have to try a push cut. Thanks for the advice!

I'm sure that there some sort of technique to it, but I'm not sure what it is. The big thing is that you can't finish up on a stone. Because the stone is perfectly flat, it doesn't follow curves very well. After the 8K stone, I go to a piece of soft hardwood charged with 100k diamond powder. That step makes all the difference.

Butch, that might be the coolest razor you've made. The blade shape and the huge bevel is just awesome. It makes me want to shave with a big, fat wedge.
