meaning of a mirror edge

so where do you guys get this stuff? like the diamond paste and what not... i'd love to learn how to do this to my knives but i don't know where to begin lol

No one has mentioned this but I sharpen on a diamond rod then i use a leather wheel coated with green compound

Maybe not as good for therapy but alot faster

Lapidary (gem cutting) supplies have a huge selection of polishes. I would also recommend Straight Razor Designs, their service is excellent.

Phillip, thanks for the heads up on Straight Razor Designs :thumbup::thumbup:

There is also classicshaving.com that sells amplex diamond paste, its some good stuff and is a water based compound.

Handamerican is highly regarded for their spray compounds.

And last but far from least DMT compound I like for higher grits and use on wood strops.

the meaning? i think the meaning might be OCD... ha ha. i had a BM 940 that i had mirror polished and needed to cut a seat belt with it. i had always liked a toothier edge but the blade sailed through the webbing with almost no resistance. i remember thinking then, when is a duller blade better? never!

Goooh:eek:

That's an amazing edge, I literally just sat here looking at it in awe. I noticed that the bevel at the tip isn't nearly as small as the bevel near the ricasso, is this because of the EdgePro? And does this mean that there is a different angle in each 'section'? Or is this just a misunderstanding on my part?

It's like that because the tip is thicker than the main edge.

On knives with a more even grind across the edge it's more even.

It's like that because the tip thins out a lot.

if the tip was thinner and the edge angle the same the edge would be smaller
now if the tip was thicker pre sharpening then you would get that nice wide sharpened bevel

Yeah you are correct....

I typed it wrong. :o

The tip is thicker. :)

I REALLY want to do this to some of my knives.

I have 600, 800, 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper. I'm just not sure what to do with it so that I don't ruin my edge or scratch up the rest of the blade.

Could I wrap the sandpaper around my Sharpmaker rods and then just use it like I normally would?

Yes you can do that, it will work. :)

I found that sandpaper wrapped around my SharpMaker rods produced scratches above the polished area, but I was using 80 and 100 grit paper. So practicing with a crap knife (or two or three) is a good idea. This is yet another area where I think there is no substitute for experience. Translation: you will foul up at least a few times before you are satisfied with the result.

i plan on getting a sharp maker, i heard they make ultra fine rods? would that be enough to get a mirror edge? and what do you guys do for a strop? i know traditionally its a big leather belt like thing, right? though i think i saw someone mention a wooden strop too.... so some pointers on essentials for the person new to polishing edges

also, how long does a mirror edge like that, stay like that? is it a redo it daily kinda thing or what
