Men and Knives on Bladeforums

Well riposted!

Here's some dinner I head-shot at 30' with my M&P 9mm. Santa hat strategically placed to avoid further damaging anyone's sensibilities.

Thanks. ;)

Looks like some good eats, that's a pretty big squirrel.

I have eaten venison and bear, but never squirrel. Are they (this is an ubernoob question) safe to eat? Like, if you have some squirrels in the woods behind your house, you drill one, you can just take it inside and what, grill it up or what?

Yep. They're totally safe to eat. Fried up with some flour on 'em they taste pretty good. Gotta get a botfly larvae out from under the skin occasionally, though.

Squirrel is an old backwoods stable. Back in the days before food stamps and such, they kept many a poor family from starving.

Yep. Groundhog too. Younger ones are tastier and the meat isn't as tough, but they all taste decent.

I appreciate the information, folks. I never knew. I have a Henry AR-7 in my trunk bag, so it's good to know that you could eat well at need. I always figured they had some sort of disease, as I was warned many times as a kid not to go near squirrels, raccoons, and so on because they all carried diseases.

I remember a Survivorman episode where he ate squirrel.
He charred the fur off first to get rid of any ticks or other skin parasites, but the meat was fine.

Coons are extremely common carriers of rabies, most of them get shot on sight here. Squirrels are cool though.

Possums as well. Are nearly immune to rabies (also can be partially or fully immune to venomous snake bites). Being marsupials, they are weird though. Forked cocks and dual vaginas.

Prairie dog is decent. Elk still is my favorite. I've always wanted to try leopard, even though it will remind me of my now deceased cat. I would prefer endangered snow leopard. Let me know where I can get my hands on one.

They are best if brined overnight no matter how you cook them. Younger ones taste better.

Well I got this m&p 40 a couple of days ago. It's my first gun. I was able to trade some labor for it and a BM 710 for a good bit of ammo. I'm pretty stoked to say the least.

My conservation club is hosting their annual game dinner next month. Squirrel is always on the menu.

I got good with my Glock G23 with a laser-tec sight, shooting squirrels out of trees. Use the budget/target rounds though, there were a lot of the little suckers around before I brought it home, enjoy!:)

Fantoni HB01. It's a beast at an almost 4 1/4" blade, but carries surprisingly small because of the almost perfect blade to handle ratio. I've owned it for a few weeks now and would highly recommend the brand.

How would you relate it to the 710? Is it noticeably larger?

You know I didn't really handle the 710 very much, and I never put them side by side. The 710 was definitely a much slimmer knife though. I can get a pic of it next to a military if that helps.
