Merchandising to the max - History Channel: Forged in Fire

I having been thinking lately that the whole world is just one big commercial. Years ago we got rid of cable and I dont watch the news or listen to the radio.

I am 32 and I am sick to my stomach from being marketed to. Often let down because they prey on our Insecurities and fears and passions.

Right now I'm working on a 7 peice steak knife set for my wife and I think being over marketed to has pushed me to be more self reliant and make more things and need less

Just what do you think the internet and your smart phone are for? Everything you say and do is being watched and targeted for marketing.

Yes that's true. But my need to learn the knife making craft brings me here. We live in a amazing era where craft skills are shown here and on videos

Has there ever been more info like on YouTube for craftsmen EVER in the history of time ?

Great options for guys like me

With YouTube you can about learn anything. And I enjoy interacting on here with good people like yourself!

This type of marketing causes me to look twice and buy once for any type of product. Maybe that is a good thing.

I believe many of you are missing an opportunity here. :( I have ordered 5 sets (OK, not really) for the idiots, oops, I mean uneducated, who will believe I have given them a GREAT Christmas gift. ;) After all, they are from "Forged in Fire" on THE History channel; what GREAT knives.

No just no. I want someone to test these and show them for what they are, of course, who will be brave enough and waste money to buy them just to prove a point?

Are they actually "forged in fire?" More likely stamped or laser cut. LOL! ;)

despite the load of 'carp' they produce, I'm still a fan of forged in fire, and especially the vikings series...

I'd go as far as saying that 'fif' has single handedly doubled or tripled the total number of knife knuts since its started

They might have, but I doubt it. Even the bad blacksmith channels on youtube are more entertaining, and I include the ones that are don't levelate between the narration and the hammer-blows peaking the mic. At this point HC hasn't been relevant in 20 years. They just happen to have gotten lucky that a few shows chanced to be kinda okay. But as long as they generate ad revenue, they will stay broadcasting.

Probably no worse than a lot of kitchen cutlery sold at big box stores. I have no problem with this. I like the hammered and sharpened by hand specs. ;)

I would think even higher targets could be met if the package read, " crafted by highly skilled (xxx name of some regional blade center in south asia) according to age old forging methods and with historically correct specs...

Just remember Flex Seal started this way and is pretty good stuff. Let's not forget My Pillow also.

They will come sharp, but once they dull , the average jimokee who has one wont be able to resharpen these tin cans. This numbered crap and certificate of authenticity crap has been going on for years, like the junk knives by Danbury mint and similar companies. What an absolute joke.It all winds up discounted and closed out at flea markets, ebay ,and garage sales; worthless mass produced garbage. How the judges of that show can let this happen is pathetic..

It's about making money. I don't place the producers of Forged in Fire to a level that would garner using the word "pathetic". It's just a show. Just some more Chinese made kitchen knives..... How about Star Wars light sabers? I'm sure they cut really well....
