Message from Ethan Becker

not Grivory?
I did read that where they sold them on knifecenter:

KABK7: Becker Combat Utility Knife

Blade Length: 7" 1095CroVan
Overall Length: 12.75"
Blade Thickness: 0.188"
Blade Coating: Black epoxy powder coat
Grind: High, flat saber grind
Handle Material: Full tang, Grivory
Sheath: Black Nylon w/ kydex insert
Weight: 12.9 oz.
Made in USA

what material are those black slabs then made of.
certainly not micarta ?

if they are made of massive grivory then that's fine to me.

must be a new to me marketing term that slipped by ;)

i found:
'''The ergonomic, trademark handle scales of the BK& T knives are molded of Grivory, a 60% glass filled thermoplastic polymer alloy for the ultimate in strength and durability.'''

and also:
'''The ergonomic, trademark handle scales of the Becker Knife and Tool knives are molded of Swiss GV6H, a 60% glass filled thermoplastic polymer alloy for the ultimate in strength and durability.'''

i've only ever seen the term "swiss gv6h" myself.

maybe that wasn't sexy enough, and they came up with "grivory", whatever THAT means :) it's tuff and good. that's all WE grunts need to know ;)

Hey Everybody....

Gibbsy always referred to Grivery or GV6H more or less interchangably....I have just confirmed, by way of Paul, that the Swiss company-Grivery- makes GV6H which is a relative of Zytel but is in some ways tougher and definitely more dimensionally stable....Gibbs told me they make nails for marine environments out of the stuff....
In short it is really tough, industrial grade, elephant snot...........The handles are hollow which makes the structure stronger(in a molding the strength comes in large part from surface area) and, of course you can store stuff in there....With my luck Murphy would cause me to lose the wrench at the wrongest moment...But........

All Best...

thanks for the info Ethan.
you make it even more clear how tough the handle slabs are.

I have a couple of Sog Seal Teams with zytel handle.
they are really fine knives.

but material tougher than that are very welcome :p

Hey Everybody..

Paul just corrected my spelling----it's GRIVORY ...Sorry about that...

All Best...

"Overview:
Solid handle slabs would be far stronger and not prone to storing water and other contaminates. A more aggressive texture on the handle would have benefits for security"

http://cutleryscience.com/reviews/machax.html

I did see mr.Nosh ,the hockeymask guy break the handle of the Becker 9 fairly easy with his hammer(on youtube knifetests).
unlike the RTAKII micarta which held up very well against his hammer.

Well I guess you should go with with solid micarta scales if you plan on smashing them with a hammer.

That said, it is true that solid handles would be stronger, no matter the material. But it doesn't matter because the scales aren't a stressed part on a fixed blade. At least not under any use that isn't utterly ridiculous.

stronger is better.and cleaner is better too.

What's your point? If you don't like the Becker handles, don't buy the knives. It's not a big secret that solid scales are stronger than hollow ones.

hello,
are we starting get offensive?

what's my point?
can't you read?

it is Ethan who said that hollow handle slabs are stronger than solid ones.
tell him wiseguy.

and please dont tell me what to buy.

I do not think anyone meant to insult you. What I think he meant is that the decision is final and that your efforts will not amount to anything. I do know where you can get after market scales, if that would be of any interest to you. :)

I like the hollow scales because they weight less and improve the knife's ballance and survival items can be stored inside. After using and beating the shit out of my bk7, the handles look just like when the knife was taken out of the box. The swiss stuff is plenty strong.

hi,
thanks for the positive reaction.
I just wanted to point out that, what I found in that knifetest article, that solid handles are stronger than hollow handles.

and saMX is right on that it doesn't matter cause the handles aren't the stressed parts.
but the fact that it can fill up with mud and water is not so great I think.just sayin.nothing else.
it doesn't mean the Becker knives are not good.
not at all.
I think the Becker9 is a great knife from what I have seen about it.
it cuts, hacks, and slices fantastic.
period.

but we all have our preferences.
and our critics.
I am not bashing Becker knives.
they have proven themselves.most people are positive about them.

ok ,that is a good thing to hear about the handles .
thanks for your reaction.

Dont base too much of your opinion on knifetests.com. Knives are used in real life situations, not in a garage with a guy bashing on it with a sledge.
