Fifty years ago, my grandfather gave me a large clasp knife from WW2. He described it as his 'commando knife', which is what most folks today think of as a Fairbairn-Sykes dagger. The knife was actually a British Navy Knife, made by Joseph Rodgers & Sons. It was strange that he would have been issued it, since he was in the Royal Artillery, rather than the Navy. He had a busy war though, and I while I don't know much about it, I know he did some commando work, so maybe that is how he came to have the knife (the Royal Marine Commandos obviously being part of the Navy). I really don't know though, maybe he had a pal in the stores, or swapped a sailor a packet of cigarettes for it. I don't think that was the case though, it was clear that he was proud of it, and that it meant something to him. He kept it in a drawer with a captured Luger.

These Navy Knives are huge, heavy things though, and were never designed to be carried in a trouser pocket, let alone that of a small boy. When I went out on my hikes and rambles, I used to carry it in the side pocket of an old gas-mask bag, which I took everywhere with me. Sadly, one day, in some woods on the edge of Sheffield, I went to get my knife, and it wasn't there. I re-traced my steps, and searched and searched for it. I had been on a good, clear path, but I never found the knife. I have never lost another, but it still upsets me to think of it, probably more as I've got older, and my grandfather is long since passed away.

I've told this story before, if perhaps not in quite so much detail, but it clearly came to the attention of my thoughtful friend H herder , because this week, I opened a package from him, to find the knife below - A 1941 Joseph Rodgers & Sons British Navy Knife. I had always hoped to come across a replacement for my lost knife, but finding these knives, in good condition, has got harder and harder over the years. Receiving one from my dear pal makes this one extra special, and it will be treasured. I'll be carrying it in a belt pouch!

I'm not sure Jer, I don't recall seeing any Richards Ring-Openers, but they produced all sorts of patterns in their earlier years. Might be Harrison Fisher
