Micron Knives

Everyone just relax. I'll give you the clarified TL;DR of the whole saga so far:

So, Mr. Micron was looking for some extra CNC milling machines to expand his business capacity, ran across the machines Mr. Survive was selling, and went to check them out.

During the negotiation process, he was shown the knives and thought they were really nice. Perhaps it was the first higher-end knife he's seen. There are many people who think a Henckels Zwillings kitchen knife is the greatest chef's knife in the universe, you know.

Anyway, he gets the machines AND fixtures and everything, more than he was even looking for initially, etc., and thinks, "Damn, there was a lot of demand for these knives, these are sweet. I'm a good businessman and I can see where the problem was and how it all went awry. With these machines and everything, I could just rapidly reboot the process and not make those mistakes."

Enter, Micron Knives, llc.

Then he's all like, "Ok I can't be making knives like crazy in the same facility as my electronics business because there will be iron dust all over the place and it will be a catastrophe, so I have to come up with a different spot for all these huge machines."

So then he gets a spot for the knife machines but has to fix it up first.

Then he goes on Bladeforums and gets dragged because that's how we roll.

Not that far off! Except we machine lots of cast iron at the shop, I'm not too concerned about iron particles. We machine electronics for the military, not aerospace.

And give me a little credit, you weren't too far off with the railroad spikes and marketplace coal forge, I did just that. Maybe not 500, but definitely too many

Aw man, I thought that was the best part. :[

Noted. Street cred +1

Whew - rough crowd! But I think they’re all well-meaning. I’d just like to once again wish you the best of luck with this endeavor. The only advice I would like to add, and maybe you’re already all set here - check the other makers’ forums and find one good, reputable heat treater. Easily as important as your choice of steel and steel vendor. Looks like you have an awesome family behind you!

First of all I have no dog (no pun intended) in this fight whatsoever, but am truly sorry for those that have been burned by the Survive Knife guy. I've read up on the history since this post started and it's been interesting to say the least. It really sucks as I too have placed money in the hands of craftsmen as deposit or prepay, prior to receiving a much desired slicing device, or accessory. There's always that doubt in the back of your mind that you hope never comes to fruition. Scammers suck. It looks like the Guy could have been up front early on, but turned out to be a complete criminal from what I've read. Karma's a bitch, he'll get his someday or maybe already has.

That being said, He obviously had a buzz about his knives for one reason or another, enough so that people gave him money up front for them. We all have our preferences and likes in this "hobby" and none is better that the other. Opinions are like assholes, we all have them and they all stink. However I would like to say be it by accident or design, Micron has managed to create his own buzz about a knife none of us have even seen yet. I have not been in the forum that long, but I've never seen a knife that doesn't even exist yet, get so much attention. Be it bad or good, I guarantee one thing, there will be many of us waiting to check one out for many different reasons. Not a bad marketing plan IMO.

I do agree with that history, Micron will have some definite scrutiny and vetting, and faces an uphill battle, but I've seen very few comments/suggestions regarding the substance of the product he will produce. Materials, heat treat, sheaths, size, shape, etc. Most of you here have a lot of experience and opinions in those areas and your positive comments and suggestions might also be appreciated.

On a positive note, it looks like from their existing established business, they will not be relying on knife making for their income. Which can be a positive as well. They appear on the surface to be in a much better financial position than Survive.

I'm sure had this come out later, the flames and pitchforks would be flaring even worse. While honesty can seem difficult in the short term, it always wins in the long run. Either way congrats for getting people talking about your product. I give Micron credit for facing this battle upfront, whether he wins this war or not, I look forward to seeing the product.

I'll be the first to say that we are in the beginning stages of developing what we think should be the knife that we put our name on. I also do not think that Guy has gotten what's coming to him, and that the worst is yet to come both legally and civilly.

I'll also stand behind my decision to announce the company this way. If anything, the knife community wants the tea.

This is General Knife Discussion. Let's talk about knives. If you want to talk about Guy and Survive!, take it to the Survive! thread in "Feedback". One thread regarding that train wreck is quite enough.

This forum is expressly for the discussion of knives. If there is nothing to talk about, then let's talk about it when there is...lest this thread end up in "Feedback" as well. Right now it seems to be on a loop.

Do you think this would be better placed in the community center? If so, could you move it there?

Ordinarily we wouldn't use "Community" for that purpose, but we'll see if it will fly for a bit. Otherwise it'll end up back in "Feedback" since, let's face it, that's what this is primarily.

Gonna move it now...

Just curious why this guy is getting the third degree. Do you inquire of the business plans of any of the other makers on this forum?

I don't see other makers announcing their business ventures and freely offering their backgrounds here on this forum.

This is not the third degree. These are honest questions asked of someone who is here voluntarily.

Good of you to come to his perceived defence I guess? We done here?

During all of this, I couldn't help but admire the quality of Survive! knives. The machinist in me truly appreciated the insane level of quality, and the business owner in me saw how and why Survive! filled a niche in the knife world. I have all the equipment, I have the fixturing, I know the process, here we go!

We do believe that Survive! made the best fixed blade knives we've ever handled.

We truly believe that Guy's ultimate goal was to produce the knives that were ordered. We came across zero indications that he was intentionally scamming people. We also came across zero evidence or indications that he had made out with the money from the preorders.
A couple of questions here because given what Guy and his wife did to this community, boy are these odd statements to say the least.

1 - Do you really believe these things?

2 - Where does your evidence suggest the money for preorders went, if it was not to said preorders and not returned to the customers, and how is this not “making off with it”

3 - Why bother defending Guy’s business or intentions at all, knowing all the people he victimized, as a way to introduce yourself and your new separate knife brand?

"We also came across zero evidence or indications". He can only report what he saw or did not see. It is a statement, not a defense.
