Midlife Crisis Fix - 315hp Subaru WRX STI

Alright, I like cars but I realize I'm not near the gearhead I'd like to be....

...what am I hearing (the "Ka-chink") when he shifts? And that surely isn't the throttle that is opposite of the alternator. What is it? (You can see and hear when it moves...but it's independent of RPMs)

You are hearing the blow-off-valve releasing pressure just as he closes the throttle. That IS the throttle you are watching, but the RPM on that beast is more in tune with the spooling up of the turbo at boost. That's when it gets busy. Look at that front inlet pipe wanting to expand at peak boost. Whooey!

Closing the throttle quickly with boost will demand the BOV to pop open. He's toying with it. You can hear it between shifts when he takes it on the road.

YIKES what kind of boost pressures do you suppose he's running?

I knew I'd feel stupid asking, makes sense now...never knew the proper term for "blow-off-valve" ...and even though I'm usually around untuned diesels I should've realized the bit about turbo controlling RPM more than throttle position.

Thanks, I now have more things to dream about now!

wow......doubly impressed.....heckuva fast lil car!!!

Around here I've seen guys put a big bag of dry ice right on the turbo before their run to cool it down. Or better said, I've seen guys get their girlfriends to put bags of dry ice on the turbo before their run.:)

That 800hp STI is one hell of a sedan. Imagine the speeding tickets you'd get all the time!

I try not to drive my subaru too much. The speeding tickets are unbearable I absolutly hate going to court. During the summer I take it to the track. Not the dragstrip I loath drag racing. Unless its rwd with a blower.

Sweet ride. Nothing like an intercooled, turbocharged 2.5L flat-4 subaru sliding through a corner. :) You'll have a blast with it over the years.

I have an '05 Forester 2.5XT. Same engine as an '05 STi but smaller turbo and different exhaust. Bought it new and now have 60,000 + miles on it. No problems yet and still pulls like a beast. :)

Update:

Well, although the supplied dyno sheet when I bought the car read happy numbers, I was only around 254whp when we tested it before doing some more performance work. So, I didn't have quite as much HP as I thought. (Also: Different dynos = different readings)

I spent a bunch of time in research, and a few bucks....

Here's the NEW results. 368 whp actual..!

It's a hoot. Methanol injection to the intercooler is next. Let's go over the 400 mark. :D

Got a few questions for ya
What kinda boost are you running (in PSI)?
What turbo, up/down pipe, and exhaust do you have?
Very nice car, but it looks way too clean. It's a rally car, go drive in some mud :D

Very nice indeed.....I noticed the bigger topmount and cold air induction setup but to get that sort of whp you must have done far more than just a simple remap and exhaust.....New turbo? Bigger injectors?

Come on give us the specs don't keep us in suspense!!:)

Here's mine.........

do your Youtube homework....;) I had all the specs on their site. Click on the video and when it opens to the Youtube site, you can read my input. Did you think I'd leave that important stuff out...?

Here it is:

One week of solid work in the www.AutomasterAMR.com shop and they achieved my goal of 350+hp w/93octane pump gas. (20lbs boost)

Upgrade included:
High-flow 750 Injectors
AMR turboback exh.
AMR BMI cold air system
AMR top-mount intercooler
AMR T-60R Turbo unit
AMR Header & up pipe
Fuel Pump
Hard-pipe inlet hose
TGV deletes and porting
AMR boost solenoid

I was VERY pleased with the service and consultation that Albert and his sons offered me. I found them to be VERY professional and easy to work with. Highly recommended!

Upcoming work will include Methanol injection to the intercooler. (400+hp  )

Alphaholic: Nice! No wonder you're curious. Spyder: It's the equivalent of a safe queen.... :)

Awesome!
I am delighted to see that you have done the complete mod from the fuel delivery all the way through to the exhaust manifold. It really is the only way to do it and achieve the proper result. Expensive but worth it.

One week to do all that work is quick. And they have a Dyno Dynamics setup... very impressive.

With 360hp at the wheels and the BIG torque of the 2.5 you will scare a few exotics....... You gonna have so much FUN!

I stopped serious knife collecting about 10 years ago and got back into cars. I love my knives but the cars are just so much more interactive......
(I have just started buying knives again though...)

Remember it will understeer a little more under certain conditions with the extra power so take a little time to get used to it.......

Enjoy!!!;)

He he he!

Right now I am driving the equivalent of Clark Kent at 1/4 throttle. Smooth, sophisticated, no bucking, absolutely a proper gentleman.....

But beyond that it's starts to get.... BUSY!

My mechanic says I am probably making 550hp at the crank, if not more. The methanol allows me to have some lattitude in the premium fuel I can get, and it is tuned 'soft' now, so it is actually less prone for heat failure.

Still, 400hp has mechanical stress, so I have to be mindful. ;)

I got to tell you guys, THis experience has been gratifying.

Next phase is a test at the strip. I am making enough power to breech into the elevens. It's all about the driver.

We'll see....

I love that car. I would love to have one. I like that body style much better than the latest. maybe one day I can get something like that, but right now paying bills and supporting the family are first.

Coop that's a great car posting some amazing power. Here's what i drive no where near as fun as you're car but it gets the job done for some cheap thrills.

Coop, do you have these horns? I see a hint of red behind your grill.

I hadn't blown my horn until a few weeks ago and when it didn't faze the idiot who was trying to back into me, I bought these:

img_0546.jpg

I'm gonna wire them up tomorrow after I get home from work and mount them on Sunday morning assuming it's not overly hot or raining.

They're a much darker red than camera makes them out to be (I wish I had your photography skills)... and they're heavy, a lot heavier than I imagined. They'll be mounted in the center grill on either side of the Subaru logo.

I won't be ignored now.

65535: No apologies accepted. Your car is BADASS!

Bushman5: Nahh. I'm staying on the dry and clean. I'm a punk. ;)

Yes. Yes again.

I just returned from a Subaru car show gathering in MT. Kisko NY at www.GPNY.com I may have quite a bit of power, but I was stunned by the other cars that are out there. WOW!

Nice STI! Cute pink stickers, too.

I have an 18 month old boy and have been primarily driving an SUV for the past year . . but I need to keep my fun car around, too.

1994 Toyota MR2 Turbo
2.0 liter 4 cyl turbo midengine
200 hp, limited slip differential
2,700 lbs
fun stuff!

Nice! with some tuning, there is no reason you cant get another 100 hp out of that car.
