Midlife Crisis Fix - 315hp Subaru WRX STI

I am finding these cars are not as easy to launch as I wished. That said, I am bound and determined to just show up and do it.

Date: Nov 12th, 2008
Place: Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ
Temp: 46° (Nice!)

I had went in August and had a REAL disappointing outing, netting a forgettable best of 13.2" (No posting for me on that). Been busy with work to return until now, and so Automaster added the Cobb 2.0 data controller with launch control to help me. (It's a rev-limiter to allow boost, I had set to 4750 rpm on this pass)

Now I am getting a bit of the hang of it, and I'm stoked to continue.

Check it out:

(1/8th: 8.09" @ 88mph)

Next are some gauges to record EGT and boost. I'm not going to stop till I get an eleven-second slip. (And then I'll stop...?? Hah! TENS!)

Nice! Its been interesting to see the progress you've made with the car.

Our family car is an '07 Subaru Forester XT, it is still stock, but I plan to add a few toys from Cobb after the car is paid off this winter.

Loverly stuff Coop! Breaking into the 11's will be a real achievement for a road car.
I am going to be at Autosport in Jan so if you want me to look for any bits for you let me know.....
Modena engineering in Aus make an awesome dog tooth gear set up which you will probably need if you are going for 11's and hard launching.

My car should run this week (Just finishing the mod) then a remap and off to the nearest mountain pass....;)

All the best
Steven

Coop , get into real driving . Come over to www.RallyNewYork.com .We just had a rally and the next will be in April. Do NOT do it as shown below .Subbies are not designed for up side down travel !!

Here is some STI porn. I think I've got the wife convinced that it would make a fine family car...;)

Hmph! Middle age crisis, my ass... I bought a Harley purely for the environmental benefits: 45 mpg, and, uh, well...:D

I can't get enough of that vid. It's on hi-def on Ken_Block's website. Just... incredible.

While we're at it. Here's what happens when a drunk runs you off the road and the inner rim of the wheel lands on the edge of the pavement.

We were out for a nice romantic midnight drive when I came around a cruve going no more than 30mph, probably closer to 25. A large pickup was in the center of the road probably going 55 or more (speed limit was 55). I had a choice to make, get hit or get off the road. I got off the road, but not far enough fast enough and the car landed on the wheel.

I think what happened was that the ABS system got confused when that wheel lost contact with the road and it locked and when the car landed it's momentum pushed down on it until it cracked and broke the inner lip.

I got lucky as I know how to handle that car and knew immediately that the tire was gone, didn't find out that the wheel was broken until I got it off. I was prepared to buy a new tire, but it turned into a $400 stock wheel from Subaru (the tire was perfectly fine).

Aside from a broken wheel, there wasn't a scratch, speck of dirt or blade of grass on the car, and it didn't need an alignment.

AWD isn't a lot of fun to drive with a spare tire.

Your opinion is fact in this case. I wasn't 'racing' but concentrating on a good time shot. The other driver was at least 4 tenths quicker out the lights with a slower ET.

SNOOZER! :p

psychopomp: OUCH!

That's crap.....:grumpy:

Glad it was only the wheel and you are all ok:)....What Subaru do you drive?

You guys are killing me. I was happy with the prowess of my offroad vehicle, now i want something very very fast.

If you see a post by me talking about buying some sports car, everyone on this thread should expect a bill... to help fund my 'quarter life crisis' sports car...

thats what i thought lol,

when i raced my vette last time at the track i raced another 'vette, a '96 6spd w/the LT4 engine which should have been quicker than my LT1 theoretically anyway but he had like a 1.4 reaction time, he just couldnt get it down, was his 1st time at the tracks, and his shifting didnt help much either, anyway my car ran a best of 13.67 not bad for a stock auto '95 LT1 vette imho, am gonna change the rear axle gears asap (go from 3.08 to 3.70's probably) which outta make a helluva lotta difference.

This is an great thread... I can't believe how much technology has changed . Thats perrty cool, 400 h.p in a Subaru. It wasn't that many years ago they made a funny lookin pickup with seats in the back :D..

I still love the old cars. My first car was a 69 SS Chevelle. 396, M-22 4 speed, AND 4.10 POSI. Bought it when I was 15, got it all detailed and took it out on my 16th B-day. I was livin large until I got into a race with a Z-28 and one of the rods broke.

Last car I had that was fast was a Winged Sprint car. Nothing quite like 600+h.p on alcohol in a car that weighs 1100 pounds :D :D :D

I've hit my mid life so I've been getting the itch for something fun again

We are brothers....

My first (and last fast street car) was a 68 Camaro 396/350hp, 4-spd, 4.88 gears, etc. At the track--open headers & slicks netted: 11.86 @ 112mph. I was a happy 19-yr-old.

Now I am knocking on that door again, only driving it to the track, power windows, AC, Cruise, Stereo, 4-dr, with a child's booster seat in the back.

Until you are on the boost, it's a simple Impreza.

Change is real. Technology is grand. Life is good.

I posted this on the Subaru forum, because they might understand, but to give you an idea of just how fast 400hp is on a top-end pass, I offer you this glimpse. Look closely.

Late night, secret location, relatively safe. Yikes. It was scary.
