I actually saw him about 4 hours ago here in Dallas at the SOS show. I don't know him and didn't get a chance to talk to him, but he was there.

Met him there on Friday, opening day. Had a very nice talk with him and Charlie Porter about knives, fighting and sheaths. Nice guy.

Hello Mike,

I’m writing about the neck sheath for a Ryan Plan B that I ordered from you on June 14, 2004, and still haven’t received. When I spoke with you on the telephone about it in October 2004, you stated that you had sold your own knife with which you were using to make my sheath at a knife show but that you would get it to me as soon as possible. I next spoke with you in January 2005 and you stated that my sheath was partially completed and that you would send it to me by the end of the week. In April 2005, still not having received my sheath, I telephoned you again. This time you told me that my sheath was still partially complete but that you would send it to me by the end of the week.

It’s now July, more than a year after I ordered the sheath, and still no sheath. I’ve tried to telephone you for the past four weeks and repeatedly left messages and received no reply. You have never responded to any of the dozen or so e-mails I’ve sent you. Mike, this is bordering on the ridiculous. This is the third sheath I’ve ordered from you since 2002, and I’ve always been more than pleased with your work and your service. I’m having serious doubts about whether I’ll ever see that sheath or my money.

Please send me the sheath or return to me my $50.

Thanks.

Edgar Garrett

With people like Buy Brown and On/Scene to name but two good sheathmakers, and alot of others, why do people keep doing business with River City?

Because so many people recommend his work. He does do good work, but I wonder if some of those people who give those recommendations are already on his priority list.

Personally, I got a bit worried after he held onto my knife for the best part of a year while he dodged calls and emails. I got my sheath and knife eventually, so no permanent harm was done.

He did do one thing for me; he inspired me to get into Kydex sheathmaking. I even discovered that the sheath he told me he was going to do in Concealex was Kydex after all.

There is no excuse for his behavior. I don't care how good his work is. Anyone who does not answer emails or his phone from customers after repeated attempts is unscrupulous, dishonest or lazy (or a combination of the 3). Anyone who takes a YEAR to make a Kydex sheath is, well, see above. I don't know how anyone can honestly say with a straight face that the wait if worth it.

Edgar, I would be interested to hear if you receive a response to your letter. I'm not only out my $50, I also sent him my knife to fit.

"Mike is "Good People"? People are defined by their actions. His actions, well, see above. Those traits are not normally referred to as "good".

Why did I send him my knife? All the great reviews of his sheaths all over the discussion boards. Not till I tried to contact him did I find a thread about his issues. That's why I started a new thread - and that's why I'm posting to this one.

I hate to break it to the general population, but making sheaths isn't rocket science. Yes, there is a lot of crap out there, but like I said, the well-known plastic guys are making top-notch sheaths. There is nothing magical about wrapping a piece of steel with a piece of hot plastic. Add to that the fact that their prices are good and a guy like Normark owns every knife ever made so half the time you don't even need to send the knife... I don't know why the laws of competition haven't applied in this case?? It sounds like Mike is a likable guy, and I've seen some of his sheaths (I own one) and they are nice, but they don't do the dishes or take the garbage out. I own two of Normark's sheaths, too, and while we differ in design principles there isn't anything unlikable about them.

Eventho' Eric (On/Scene Tactical) is up in Canada, I'd do business with him again WAY before I'd even THINK about doing business with Mr. Sastre...A year (or longer) for a "plastic" sheath is just nuts! And as far a "quality" goes, I'd put Eric's work up against Mike's work ANYDAY!

i agree with glockman if ya need kydex i would call eric he does great work. a year for a kydex sheath? its not brain surgery, i could see a month perhaps tops, but a year? ridiculous imho and definitly not worth that kinda wait.

Ditto what Dann said. Eric lives in Canada but his shipping to the USA has never been an issue.
