Military grade fixed blade

Fehrman Last Chance.

Mine took a couple of extra weeks to order because Fehrman had a large military order that he had to complete first, so I know these blades are over there.

It's got a 5.5" blade, it's tough as hell, and very, VERY, capable.

Have a look...

Love that knife but $260...ouch!! No sheath either...dont get my wrong...I WANT ONE! The one I want is $335. How is their warranty?

I was 11b and if I was in the sandbox it would be ESEE all the way. No bs warranty and very very affordable.

Excellent advice.

I am 11B and i am in the sandbox and i carry an old ontario rat 3 strongside on my molle and a microtech curahee crosshair on my weakside. (this way if im in close quarters and someone grabs my weapon i can just drop it and slash, the weapon is attatched to me so theyre not going to be able to do anything with it)

If i were you id give him an ESEE-4 Theyre about the perfect length and thick enough to pry with.

Multi-tools are great but they break alot and theyll be issued to him at his unit. I got like 3 of them before i deployed.\

They may also issue an auto folder at his unit so i wouldnt buy him a folder either.

Id definatley throw in my lot with the RC-4

They have sheaths available for the knives, and I got mine with a kydex sheath that does the job just fine. Yes they are expensive, but Fehrman is a tool and die manufacturer in addition to a knife maker, so he really knows his materials, and the steel quality in this blade is second to none. A test between this blade and one made of INFI would be interesting to observe...

If cost is an issue, the other knives listed will do just fine, but I would rather have my Fehrman any day.

Here are Fehrman's words on his guarantee, as taken from their website.

"Our Guarantee

Fehrman Knives are Guaranteed not to fail… for life.

If you unintentionally damage your knife, we will recondition or replace it."

All the knives listed are gtg. But. I'm shocked no one has mentioned tops knives. Yeah they have gimmicky name. But so does busse and everyone knows they are top notch. And tops has a forever warranty. Good knives for deployment. Apache falcon, marine heat, screaming eagle, air wolf. All good choices and anything busse. Good luck

Knowing what I know now, if price were not an object, I'd carry a Busse. But first, I'd buy a Leatherman.

Something that you are not afraid of trashing, since army indeed does include dashing into all sorts of places. Especially sheath is important, that can take abuse and doesn't make the knife fall out in critical rolling in sand pits. I wouldn't take anything too heavy or clumsy either that takes room from your already tightly packed fighting gear.

What is the absolute must have fixed blade knife that our troops want on their side while deployed in the sandbox? My nephew just entered Army basic training and I want to give him a good blade when he completes his training. I am familiar with many of the production and custom knives available, but I really want to know what is hot with the troops. Thanks.

Wait until he is actually assigned to a operational unit. Then he will have a much better idea what is required in that particular MOS. For 95% of the military a Swiss Army would be totally adequate but for that other 5% life is much more interesting.

That's because ESEE knives are equally as good if not better for less $ and a better warranty. For some reason Tops' website isnt working right now and I wanted to see how the warranty was similar/different than ESEE so i googled "tops knives warranty" and the first thing I saw was "This warranty becomes null and void if the knife is abused" (this was from tops' website) And I closed the browser window right there. ESEE is no questions asked, you break it, we replace it free.

If I was serving in the armed forces, I'd like to have a Fallkniven F1.

iirc: the Fallkniven S1 and A1 are both approved for use by US and NATO forces in the field. i believe the F1 is shorter than US/NATO specs.

the F1 is the standard Swedish Air Force knife.

i could be wrong.

I agree with a lightweight, tough as nails fixed blade knife with 4-6in. blade and good multi-tool. Most expensive brands that are marketed as being a favorite of military really are not at all. I spent a lot of time over there the past 7 years and never saw a single Emerson or Strider or similar. Some manufacturers will be generous enough now and then to donate a few knives and request a picture of the Soldiers/Marines posing with them.

I would probably get him an ESEE-5 and a knife sharpening kit.

Ka-Bar Marine fighting knife.

Ka-Bar Marine fighting knife.

i am a marine and the Ka-bar is iconic but if you loook at the blueprints (on the box) you can see right where the blade is prone to snapping (no it does not happen all the time)
i wish they woudl make the blade to tang interface a bit more meaty
also if you think you need it for fighting you have a bayonet that has a blade over 6 inch

Speaking of ka-bar, anyone know why the ricasso part is so goofily aligned to handle, as if it was manufacturing flaw?

Yea yea I know, stupid whining.

Always wondered that myself. They all seem to be that way. The tang is not centered with the rest of the blade.

I have seen some WWII Kabars that were centered, much more pleasing to the eye. Probably a "production" thing.

A tried and true Ka-Bar should do.
Ka-Bar is a great choice and is time tested. I would also look at the Tops Hawk Recon. I know some marines out in Kandahar who have them including the OIC. They swear by them. Also I like the TOPS Stryker Defender Tool as well. This is not a big/heavy but is designed to cut yourself out of a helicopter and will do what needs to be done. These are tough hard use knives for exactly this purpose. Take a look these review on YouTube and ask the question. "If the you know what hit the you know where what knife do I want my son reaching for.."

Some type of Multi tool and and Strider SMF or SnG would be a great gift.

I definetly agree with the Multitool option.

I gave an army buddy of mine who did 2 tours in Iraq an Emerson CQC7...after he came back he showed me the knife...parts of the entire edge was either grossly chipped or grossly rolled over...He told me that he used the knife daily to cut metal tab strips (??????????)...anyway I face-palmed myself...

So later when he shipped out for Afghan, I got him a blacked out Leatherman Wave....proper tools for the job.

Trust me, he'll use his firearm rather than the knife for self defense...and when he does use the knife, it'll be for cutting metal tab strips lol (wtf are metal tab strips???)

So basically get him a multitool AND a fixed blade knife that can stand up to cutting metal tab strips lol...I dunno but any Busse sounds about right.

sounds like he never sharpened the knife and still try to slice through, would cut metal banding all the time with old Spyderco Endura and Cold Steel Voyager among others. With nicer, newer knives always put a little notch in it and twist, pull to snap and remove it.

Multitools are the greatest though, I still use the same one for the past 8 years for all types of things.
