Military pics outside, in use, or just looking bada$$.

Parted out two pigs and 4 lambs for Chinese New Year celebration with south fork and 440v Millie. It's my first military, I avoided them because of the top down. That was the first time I used it and I see what yall are talking about. It's an awesome design that cuts well and is very comfortable.

Love that South Fork, really want to pick one up.

I've seen Cruwear compared lightly to M4, with M4 seemingly getting the upper hand. But, I honestly can't notice much difference myself. I enjoy both. Two of my favorite regular users are this Cruwear Millie pictured here, and a Gayle Bradley.
This is coming from a guy who really likes how Spyderco does S30V, XHP, and VG-10, though, so what do I know. :p

I would say CRUWEAR is similar to 3V, XHP, and M4. I don't have any D2, so can't comment. Out of those 3, XHP feels the most similar to me. 3V takes a beating better than the others, but loses its fine edge first. CRUWEAR loses some toughness, but gains in edge holding. M4 is still tough, but less so and has better edge holding. Edge holding isn't everything to me though. I am pretty rough on my knives and have rolled (never chipped) S30V, VG10, ZDP-189, CTS-204P, M4, ELMAX, and probably some others I am forgetting. I have never rolled CRUWEAR, XHP, or 3V. I may have not pushed XHP too hard though. CRUWEAR is just a very well balanced knife steel that excels at nothing but lacks nothing. It holds that fine razor edge very well and touches up nicely.

Chemistry isn't performance. The graphs from the Crucible site has 3V almost triple the toughness of D2 and Cruwear. About double toughness of M4.
D2 and Cruwear are nearly the same

All steels are limited to their chemistry.

In the PDF you listed (your link does not work for me for some reason so here is the pdf on the link that worked for me)

http://www.crucible.com/PDFs\DataSheets2010\ds3Vv1 2010.pdf

Look at the values of Impact Toughness in the table.

CPM 3V HRC: 62 Impact: 40 ft-lb.
Cru-Wear HRC: 62 Impact: 30 ft-lb.
CPM M4 HRC: 62 Impact: 32 ft-lb

(Granted I am very critical on datasheets as they do not give you all the heat treatment information and piece orientation etc for testing so see it more as marketing)

Not really that big of a difference and expected if you look at the chemistry. XHP/D2 etc compared is IMO the really odd ones out and forms completely different carbides to that of 3V and Cru-Wear.

what a great thread for what is one of the perennially under-appreciated knives in the spyderco lineup! My contribution comes from this weekend - this is my second spring owning a house, and I figured I'd finally get down to learning about how to care for the plants growing around it, so for the first time ever I spent an entire afternoon pruning and mulching, with the Millie pulling its weight. love the ergos for use with gloves (I wear XLs, so the extra long handle means it's extra comfy for me!)

I've been eyeing the Cruwear Millie since they first came out, and Giz, your pics put me over the top since I think I'm gonna pass on the 204P sprint. I've got one on the way now and super excited to put it to work. Now my backup S30V must go to a new home...

Glad I could give you the little nudge that you needed to make the purchase.

Cruwear Millie is a living legend of a workhorse user.
Why they haven't done a PM2 Cruwear is beyond me. M4 will be primo, but still don't understand why Cruwear never made an appearance?

Love the Pics! Is that a 450F of some sort?

Awesome

Thats badA$$! I love seeing the military used like this!

Very True. I underestimated it for a long time. I finally tried one last year and was sold. Now The Cruwear has made it even better.

Love that CF

CRF250R.
Have a 450 behind it though. Wanna get something newer with EFI and customizable mapping, though.

I thought it looked familiar. I used to have an 08 Yz 450f. Got rid of it and went back to a KTM 250xc 2-stroke. Sadly I currently have no bike at the moment. Needed tires for both our vehicles.

I'll get another one sooner than later.

So I had the sharpmaker out trying to get my seb back in working order and I decided to take the Millie to it just for the heck of it. I marked the blade with a sharpie and took it to the 40 degree setting and it was not taking anything but the very first part of the edge.

So I switched it to the 30 degree setting and it took a full wipe of the edge from both sides removing the sharpie. Is the 30 degrees inclusive common for these Millie's? I thought the last two I owned were at 40. I can't say that for certain.

What are your guys thoughts?

Thanks
Mark

I'd say anything between 30 and 40 deg incl is normal for a factory bevel.

I like mine thinner to slice better. This one is about 18-20 deg incl with a 30 deg incl micro bevel.

Quite interesting to see how close the 3V vs Cruwear chemistries are! I cannot imagine that anyone will see much of a difference in real world use if they are at the same hardness, edge angle and edge finish, unless the heat treats are way different.

Every time I pop in to this thread, I feel the urge to go outside and stick a knife into a tree...

This thread is like cruwear lovefest!

I feel like I'm missing something...and those grey scales are sweet too!
