Well, here is the update! I really enjoyed shooting the Mini 30. Its a real carbine, and thats my sweet spot. I got all head shots in my silouette at 40 yards free standing. Thats good enough for me. The point is to have a woods bumming quick draw rifle so that if I scare up a deer I might be able to get a shot off at it.
I bought a nice wooden Mini 14 stock off ebay for it, but they aren't plug and play with the Mini 30. The clip is a smidge too wide. So I ordered the stock reinforcement part for the mini 30, and broke out the file and chisels. Really only took ten minutes for me to inlet the stock for the new part, and the job looks professional. My gunsmith buddy said I should just do it myself, but I was worried. No biggie. Now it looks like a rifle should. I'll keep the plastic stock for weekends when the SS and plastic make for a bombproof rifle. But for most of the time, I'm gonna want the wood.
Fun stuff.
Haha! 5 posts at Bladeforums dot com, and I make you spend $ with a post in my forum, and its not on a Fiddleback knife?

Don't think I'm not digging those my friend. Oh yes.
Anyone want to trade?
I still give my .30 carbine the top honor among guns I own. (I know my 1911 is rare and wonderful, and historically significant, but I'm more into rifles than pistols.) Its so much fun to shoot, the groups are smaller, the clip is easier to switch (BY FAR! WTF Ruger?), and the gun is 1" shorter. I just wish you could buy the same gun in other calibers that are more deer friendly/harmful.

personally I'd rather have a .30 carbine
