Mint or not mint condition

The same e-bay vendor also had a 58OT for sale, something does not gell with that image, 58OT's have not been made for 20+ years and certainly did not come in a Schrade Old timer box, found in the factory possibly. continuity dept did not do a good job there.

....it clearly states there are no chips or cracks in scales...how can one state that without inspection which would have revealed the damage.Open and shut case he has either not inspected it to make the statement or he has inspected and seen the damage..either way he is 100% wrong with his description and should refgund in full. That was alot to pay for a user. IMHO Hoo Roo

As someone who sells on Ebay I can say the hardest thing for me is to list a knife as mint.I list everything I see wrong because I also buy a lot of knives and hate surprises.About the only knives I list as mib are a few scrims that haven't been out of the box.Even these develop verdegris and if you polish it out the knife is not mint anymore.I've been told I miss some sales from being so honest but I'd rather miss a sale than have a knife returned and an unhappy buyer.Arnold

Matthew,
Go forward with the eBay dispute. I would send it back! No collector considers that a mint condition knife. He may have his opinion, but he is wrong. Send it back registered mail, or whatever method leaves you with a written record of his receiving the knife. Then pray for him.

Most guys involved in this hobby of collecting knives are the salt of the earth - kind, straightforward and honest as the day is long. And you know, this guy may be alright, just wrong. Hell, I've been wrong.

But, DON'T GIVE UP. You paid for a mint knife (twice in my opinion) and received damaged goods. File the dispute. You're doing right.

Good luck.
Kevin

sportcolbs sell thousands of knives, and sold me a stinker or two! It took me several emails, but he refunded me in full after I emailed him a bunch of times. It is hard to get his attention, so I am extremely careful if I bid on any of his knives. Don't give up! Send him 2-3 emails a day!

I sent him 2 emails and his response was to send it back for a refund less shipping. Now maybe I do have some hard feelings tword the man but I am not going to pay shipping for something I won't have when it's over. I escalated the situation to let Paypal make the descision. I thought I was being more than fair to ask for only 1/3 the purchase price for a refund. He's adament that his knife is Mint because he had to unwrap it to take pics of it. I'm tired of trying to reason with the man. Maybe that is not very Christian of me but I have had it with him!!

Its important that you dont compromise stongly held beliefs about personal ethics when you do this.

If I'm not mistaken, PayPal is going to require that you return the item at your expense if they side with you. If he sells as many knives as has been stated, he will be feedback and PayPal claim sensitive. Once the situation escalates he may decide to settle with you. Just remember there is a law more sure than gravity always at work. You can't plant corn to get wheat. It just doesn't work that way. Protect and advocate your position strongly; but, don't allow your own mind to be poisoned. Even if this particular situation seems to go south on you the pendulum will swing back your way somewhere else as long as you keep your mind and your actions in the right vein.

I have an idea. If several of us send POLITE emails to him, saying we and our friends will no longer consider buying his knives, maybe he'll change his mind. He's a marketer after all! We should mention the specific MINT knife which is after all a mis-placed reject! If you give me your info, I'll write him!

Here is Bill's Addy SPORTCOLBS@aol.com and the link to the listing is http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190079318495&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=009 Guys perhaps a kind word here would be more effective than a blackball. You might mention that we are all collecters and have more insight than he does and it would be more profitable to listen to our advise. He is convinced his knife is Mint because he unwrapped it ot take pics. He has been missled and it may not be entirely his fault. I had a bad headache this morning and I was not at my best. I appologize to everyone here for my earlier behavior. I really prefer not to give up the knife. I have not seen that Scrim on an LB7 before. Other that that one spot the rest of the knife is beautiful. A simple attempt to make good on a mistake is all I'm after. The money is really imaterial to me,the princaple of the situation is what matters to me. I do not want anyone else to suffer of this same situation in the future. He will hopefuly learn a lesson here. Thanks, Matthew

I've emailed him, and sent you a copy! Here it is again!
Hi Bill,
Here is hoping this email will actually improve your profile among knife collectors. Concerning this knife you sold:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190079318495&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=009
It has been the topic of some discussion among the many Schrade collectors, as well as general collectors, on Bladeforums.com!! No one will believe that knife is mint, and the buyer paid top dollar for it. I strongly suggest you refund him half the money, and let him keep it. You and I know you will have trouble selling it at all!
But much more important, your reputation will seriously suffer for years to come. I for one will never buy from you again. at last count, I've bought 45 knives from you!!!

Email sent, here's a copy:

Schrade MIB Owl scrimshaw 507SC lockback knife Item number: 190079318495

Hi Bill,

As a fairly new collector, I pay close attention to what other buyers and sellers have to say on bladefourms.com. I saw the picture of the above knife, and it certainly isn't in mint condition. I hope there has been a lack of communication between you and Matthew and you work to remedy the problem as quickly as possible. I have had one issue with a purchase on ebay, and the seller immediately corrected the situation and refunded my cost, shipping to me, and return shipping to him. I would recommend that seller to anyone. I hope Matthew will be able to recommend you once you resolve the problem.

...I was more subtle than you blokes..here's mine..."if you dont refund Matthew half his money Pal and let him keep the knife I'm flying over from Oz and I'm going to rip your bloody arms off which you wont require since you dont open your boxes anyway..no chips or crack in scales..how do you know unless you look!" Matthew me old mate..give him the headache not you..We tend to be more demure in the Colonies...Hoo ROO

Here is sportcolbs pathetic response!!
" I could care less! "
This is all he wrote! The quotation marks are mine. My advice is to pursue him through Paypal, and ebay. They make it tedious, and I suspect he knows that or he wouldn't adopt such a porky attitude!
I hope you will all join me in boycotting his site. Who needs a shithead like that!

My thanks to all of you for your efforts but the guy is really hardheaded. Paypal has the ball right now so we'll see what happens. Hopefully they have common sense. Matthew

Here is my e-mail to hardhead:

"Bill, this knife is obviously not Mint by anyone's estimation. If you pulled a knife out of the factory box and it was riddled with rust it wouldn't be Mint. This knife obviously either got by quality control or was one of the many seconds and rejects sold at the factory auction. It is in NO way, by any objective standard, a Mint knife. It would have difficulty passing as Good used condition with this obvious and major flaw. What goes around comes around. It will best serve your long run interests to rectify this with the buyer."

Perhaps a post should be placed on The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly section of BladeForums so that others get a heads up on this guy.

As to the seller's comment that "I could care less"; obviously he has no morals or conscience and is in a reprobate state. My uncle says of such people, "It's usually better for all concerned to simply take them to the river and drown them." (my other favorite quote from my uncle, frequently spoken to repeat trespassers is: "Life in prison just ain't that long for a 70 year old man that don't get along with his wife. Hell, a good lawyer will keep me out of jail on appeal until I die of natural causes.")

Barry if you know where to do that at please do. I am kinda new to forums and I wouldn't have a clue as to how to do that. The guy is not going to come around. Some people you just can't reason with. It's sad really when a person can't admitt when they are wrong. Heck,I'm wrong all the time.

I sent a letter explaining the damage to his reputation as well as his finances. I then explained to him that since I work out of my home, I would have no problem contacting anyone that was bidding on his items of the situation that Matt has dealt with. I asked him to do the right thing. If he comes back nasty at me, well, then my italian heritage kicks in.
