Modded RC3 with firesteel notch - an ongoing review

Ugh - effin' rain all day today and probably most of the weekend. This will be interesting :) Mike - I'm interested to hear about that notch on Joe's design also.

7rip - I hope I don't regret doing it... :)

Matthew - The rain is going to hinder me a bit. I'll get out in the garage later if the rain doesn't let up and play around.

Hmmm Im being inspired...

instead of moding the blade mod the grip
cut a recess, a mortise if you will, with a little finger notch cut in the grip to acess it
this will allow clearance for a thin piece of steel to hing around the grip screw.
folds away when not in use

what do you guys and gals think? doable?

I like your thinking but can't really get a visual. Any chance for a drawing or photoshop?

Think of a folding knife housed in the grip of a fixed blade.
Use some nylon washers to keep it from removing the powder coat under the grip.
The "blade" rotates around the grip screw and hides under one scale of the RC3.

Sounds doable, but it would be a pain in the arse and a moving part. :)

My darn camera died in the middle of taking video. I must say it's not working that well thus far. I need to get the dremel back out and play with it a bit more to get a sharper corner that will throw sparks a bit better.

One of the RAT guys said something about using the last inch of the blade as a striker and I tried it out and it was very comfortable and worked well. If you get the pressure right it doesn't dull the blade that quickly.

I'm not giving up, fellas I just need to make a bit of changes, grind a bit and get some more practice. I'll mess around some more once my son goes to sleep. In theory it sounds and looks great I just hope it works well for me.

I have to admit it was Joe's idea on that TOPS knife, I just made it work for me. I like it so far. I'll be posting a more in depth review after I've had a chance to use it some more.

Just call it the Shango notch and I'll be happy as a puppy on a porkchop. Besides, that way everyone will know what kind of notch you are talking about.

Shango notch it is, my friend. I just shot ya a PM about it

I just got done grinding on it a bit to make it work a little better and also tried to clean up the portion with no coating. I've got some mustard/vinegar on it right now to keep it from being so shiny and hopefully blend in a little better.

Once myright jr. goes to bed I'll put the handles back on and fire up some sparks in the garage since it's still raining here.

Ok I did some work to the Shango notch to make it work better and I like it a lot more. It looks kind of goofy with only a portion of the coating off. I still need to smooth it out some more - I'll post pics of the notch in a bit. I'm waiting for everything to upload to photobucket.

Here is a video I did for comparison. This one is using a mag/ferro stick using the edge of the blade only. I used the last inch or so of the blade. Don't laugh at my sandals and socks... ;) Also, yes, I did hit the edge on the ground. I touched up the edge on my wheels and its back to shaving sharp :thumbup"

Here is the video of how well the edge works for making fire.

ahhHHH edge bashing concrete floor! Try locking your knife arm, and dragging the steel across the knife. You don't mess up your tinder pile that way.

Joezilla that actually looks very usefull. Would you be angry If I made a knife or two with it? (and by that I probibly mean 3-4)

Here are some pics of the notch - it's almost complete I just need to figure out a way to clean it up a bit more.

I'll post these in the first post also so they don't get lost in the thread.

The Shango Notch it is!

I won't be angry if anyone uses it. (Hell it takes more to get the darn "patent" and trademark) and then actually having the time to sue someone, and come on, over a notch? Not with my wallet! I'm from the South, not CA (we just walk up to the person rather than using lawyers). I wouldn't mind though if you referred to it as "The Shango Notch" from now on. Not only does it help TOPS and I out, but it kinda sets itself apart from any other type of fire steel notch I reckon. I think thats fair enough, right?

did ya'll see this video, I think 42blades posted it

I'm using Misch metal in that one, and sometimes it does take more than a few hits. Either you hit it or you don't, but that is the same with most misch. Once you get it down you are throwing sparks like nunzilla. I like this motions cause it aims the spark, and you can get a little more downward force. But by all means don't over complicate it, just try and get a spark and work with what you are comfortable with.

There's a great idea! I wonder why no knife company has thought of that yet?!?!
