Modded RC3 with firesteel notch - an ongoing review

Don't worry, its not sharp on the end there. Just enough to make a small 90 degree angle. Just like the back of a spine (which you should be using for your firesteel unless something is wrong, I never use my actual blade!!!) . It will not cut you no matter how hard you try.

Exactly

Well - I played around some more today with the notch and I'm getting more and more used to it. I'm at the point where I can make sparks on demand. It took me a bit to get it exactly right but I'm all good now.

If you were to ask me if I'd do it again the answer would probably be "maybe". The thing is that I've got to carry a fire steel anyway then it's not much more to carry an independent striker with it. I guess back ups aren't a bad thing though.

It doesn't take away from the comfort of the knife at all so it's not bad. I don't like the way it looks since I had to strip some of the black coating. I'm thinking of stripping the rest but not sure yet.

Why not just file the powder coating off the top of the blade where the thumb grooves are?

I think it's because it's easier to use the Shango notch when you're cold or have lowered dexterity. :)

The notch is a good idea, I was searching for a way to make sparks with my rc3, the thumb grooves are somewhat rounded, they don't work well.
