Modded RC3 with firesteel notch - an ongoing review

There's a great idea! I wonder why no knife company has thought of that yet?!?!

They have ;)

I'm not smart enough to think of that all on my own. :(

We've got a moderator in the Wilderness forum that teamed up with TOPS to create a knife called the Shango. It's got the notch on the end of it - theirs looks much prettier then mine does ::D Mine works just as well though

I'm throwing consistent showers off this notch - I hope to get some more pics and videos as I'm out in the woods in the real environment.

consistent showers are something people have told me take, rather make with a knife notch.

I saw that TOPS knife also and thought what a great idea. I'll have to give it a try on one of mine, now that I see it can be done fairly easy. You did a great job!

Thanks bro - I think I'd put it on the other side if I did it again though. Think long and hard before you decide to bite the bullet.

Well I've been playing with this more and more and have decided that It would probaby be much more comfortable to use if the notch was on the other side. :o

It would allow the knife with the sheath on to be more comfortable in my hand and also allow me to see whats going on a bit more.

It still works ok but I have a feeling it could be better. I'm not going to do any more mods to it, I'm just going to leave it as is.

I'm happy that I did this as it has given me the confidence to make other mods.

?? are you left handed? Did you see the video on how to do it, while striking?

I'm interested in the opposite side theory. I'm going to have to play with it.

Not really. It gives you a functioning striker for the softer firesteels that require a sharp edge to strike them--the advantage here being that you don't dull down part of your actual knife blade in the process.

In a way I am surprised that most coated knives tagged "survival" don't have some kind of striker feature. Any insight?

Very true. I've found that the mag/steel combo I got from walmart works best using a very sharp edge to throw sparks. The notch works well for this.

It seems this could be a solution to a problem that doesn't exist?

Quite possibly - but I enjoyed trying this out and making it work. One could argue that you should carry a dedicated striker but why not try something different. You don't know till you try!

Hey Joe - I'm right handed but tend to want to strike the steel with the knife in my left hand for some reason. I really think the Shango notch works best as it is on the Shango being at the bottom of the tang, flat as opposed to putting on the edge of the angle tang as on the Rat I modded. In my opinion it's a little difficult to hold the knife securely while striking. I find myself using a pinch grip on the handle which actually fatigues my fingers quite quickly if I don't get a good shower of sparks going quickly.

I'll keep trying. The notch is there to stay so I am going to figure out the best way for it to work with me!

Thanks for your help, Joe.

I could never have a sharp edge or even a false edge on a pommel. I like the notch idea to save the blade sharpness, but having it on the handle is just not very safe. Use the choil area or something.

Jeff if someone modded their knife like this at the choil would it harm the blade or make it weaker?

That is a great mod!!! Good job on taking a great tool and adapting it to your needs!!

Don't worry, its not sharp on the end there. Just enough to make a small 90 degree angle. Just like the back of a spine (which you should be using for your firesteel unless something is wrong, I never use my actual blade!!!) . It will not cut you no matter how hard you try.
