modern mountain man rifle

the iron sights are completely useless. I HIGHLY recommend the Ruger Target Grey Frontier. It's even smaller, with a thicker stainless steel barrel and a comparable price, I got mine for around 400 dollars. I put a burris scout scope on it and the combination is unbeatable. 1.25 MOA with 15 dollar a box walmart ammo is the norm, with factory matchgrade it is consistantly sub-moa out past 300 yards. The scope is a bit heavy but screams "quality" and "durable". I'm waiting for them to come out with a similar scope with a fat, simple ballistic recticle so you have some idea as far as ballistic and windage adjustments...

Leupold will install a bunch of different reticles into their own scopes as an after-market option for a very reasonable price, or for your Burris you might look at some of the other outfits like Premier Reticles, I'm pretty sure they do Burris.

Love the Ruger Frontier - as soon as I can find one in .308 it's mine...

Do it all? That’s pretty tough. Probably a .30-06 bolt action of you preferred make and model with a low magnification scope like a 1-4x.

I need to get away from this thread before I start daydreaming about a Marlin Guide Gun again. Completely impractical for me. I have a good deer rifle, I live in Missouri where the scariest thing we have to shoot is a whitetail. All that said, I’ve wanted one for years and will most likely have to get one.

I have to agree. I don't need a Marlin Guide Gun, but I keep trying to think up good reasons why I should get one. The new version with the extended tube (6 rounds) is especially interesting.

I’ve kept up with gun news nearly to the minute for years, but as soon as I stop watching, things like this come across! I hadn’t even seen this yet! I could do without the scout rail, but the rest of that gun is sweet.

No rifle expert having only used three rifles but I would go with what I know and thats .303 enfield with iron sights. Few moving parts and accurate out to 300m. I would be aiming to get within a third of that if hunting.

A scoped Ruger No. 1 in .270 would be pretty hard to beat in North America.

I'd have to agree w/ that assessment- they have a light sporter that has iron sights (if the scope happened to go to sh1t)

I shot one a fair bit (not a sporter) in .25-06, it was a tack driver- it was damn pretty too :D

My Win Model 88 lever action in .308 is pretty nice. Just need to find a couple extra mags.

Yep. Love my Enfield. Nice and basic, and accurate, like you said. Thank goodness Prvi Partisan makes affordable factory ammo for it, else it would be a bit too pricey to shoot much.

LOL. You sound like me! Although we do have black bears here in NY. I just put in an order for the H&R Handi-Rifle in .45-70, now I'm considering a Marlin 1895 or 1895G.

Take a look at this website for more info on the .45-70:

Not really impractical. One reason I loved my 1895 when I had it is that the .45-70 is a slow round and does not do a lot of meat damage -- meaning it doesn't leave a lot of bloodshot meat, even if you hit bone, like a higher velocity round will do.

Nice, soft-shooting 300-gr or Remington 405-gr loads do just fine on everything in the lower 48 and HI.

There, now you have a reason to go buy a rifle you don't need. ;)

You can thank me later.
