modern mountain man rifle

Hi Unsub, don't see you on the Yard much now, how are you doing? What amazes me on these threads is the huge differences people have...your PH 303 sounds a nice rifle...no one yet seems to have picked up on that the old muzzle loaded rifles of Mountain Men could be loaded with shot as well as bullets. It made a versatile combo...albeit limited by today's standards...but I still favour either a combo gun or a rifle and shot gun...if limited to just one...it would be a shotgun all the time....much easier to live off the land with this than a rifle IMO...and that's true from the Rockies to the Jungles of Borneo. The OP might have asked the wrong question when refering to a rifle....because the old Mountain Men ML's were both. The loads being used by Rogers Rangers men when operating through Canada were "shot" and "slug" and they are my idea of Canadian Mountain Men....depends ofcourse on what is meant by Mountain Men.

Since the gun that feels like it was made for my hands is a H&R single shot.
My choice would be a handi-rifle 30-30 first choice or a 308 would work.

I'm planning on getting the Handi-Rifle in .45/70 for deer season.

american arms [h& r.] single shot
peep sight 270
one screw breaks it down to be carried in pack
270 with 150 or 160 gr. will kill any bear
130 gr.shoots flat enough for any long shot.

New England single shot in .308, with an additional barrels in 12 GA. and .22 LR.

I would take it with iron sights on the rifle barrels.

All things on earth can be dealt with with a 12 gauge shotgun and the proper selection of ammo.....and preferably adjustable chokes or inserts.
Robins, squirrels, turkey, deer , elk, bear. No problem. As long as you are experienced.
It would also be VERY effective on zombiealitos, which will be taking over the world.SOON !

You won't be disappointed I have one, It drops deer like you hit them with a truck I have had good luck with 300 grain sierra hollw points with a decent dose of IMR3031
Only reason I would pick a 30 cal over it is I have an old H&R mod 157 that is now a 30-30 ackley improved. I bought a mold and have played around and come up with a good small game round that shoots to point of aim with out changing my scope from regular round I could load it in about any short action 30 cal

Tough decision,

I have the Savage Scout. Nice because it has iron sights to fall back on if the scope pukes.

I want a Steyr Scout so bad I can taste it. (7mm-08)

But If I knew I could not come back and grab another it would be a Marlin Lever Gun. I have both .45-70 and .30-30. Western Canada probably 45-70.

Another option would be Ruger Frontier another scout type rifle.

45-70 or 450 marlin.

i have the 450...awesome cartridge..it and the 45-70 are nearly identical in FPS and energy, but the cartridge design is different..450 is a belted cartridge, the 45-70 a rimmed cartridge.

the 450 casing is capable of withstanding greater pressures than the 45-70, but to me it makes no diffrence because the 45-70 has a much broader range of reloading options that the 450...LOL @ marlin/hornady.

As a man in the mountains... :)

Not modern, but Remington Model 141 in .35 rem.

Slide-action, 6 rd capacity, fairly light weight, fairly short & handy. Also can be taken down into two pieces for travel, etc using a thumb screw.

No real world experience w/ this rifle however.

The primary reasons that the mountain men carried rifles was to kill large game and people. My mind tells me that an M14 or an FAL would be about the best thing going. No question as to it's self defense capability and although .308 it is a bit light for elk and moose, I think it'll get the job done. Especially with 2 or 3 or 10 rounds in it.;)

Defilently a Marlin 30as or a Marlin 336 30-30 WCF plus a scope with high rise sight so the irons sights are still visible. :D

My choice would be my 444Marlin lever action. Which appropriate loads, it can take everything from mouse to moose and the big bears too! There's quite a variety of loads that this cartridge can use including shot, ball and buck/ball loads so that smaller game can be taken at shorter range as well. Also, with a six round capacity, there's plenty in reserve for an emergency! ;)

my first choice would be a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 because I own two and know them well. My only concern would be availabilty of ammo. I roll my own and I know not every store carries 45/70.

My second choice would be a light weight bolt action in 30-06. It would have to have iron sights and a scope with quick detachable rings.

Thanks Mike, always have to check back in now and again. Puter died and fingured it was time for a new nom de plume. Chris

What do you recommend for factory ammo? I don't handload. Maybe I need to start!

I would take my Remington 700 mountain in 30.06. With all the different load offerings , you can make it as mild or wild as you want. I've got a Leupold vari-x 3.5 x 10 w/the adjustable objective , good out to 400 yards.:D
