Modified Production Knives (traditional only)

I ordered a morakniv 2000 blade blank and a block of ironwood. I’ll post pictures when I get done with putting them together if I don’t screw it up.

Slow going so far, mainly because my tools were inferior. I don’t have a drill press or wood cutting drill bits so I tried to just drill holes and clean out the sides with a file. I ended up borrowing a chisel from my neighbor which helped a lot. It took a LONG time and left a wider gap than I would have liked, so I had to use a lot of epoxy and it took two rounds of it to get the hole properly filled. Still, the blade is in and it is straight. I’m ready to shape the handle and hopefully remove stray epoxy from the blade and hilt portions.

I’m also debating how much of the wood to take off the bottom of the handle. It is about 5 in. Any recommendations?

Easily my most modded knife, which is a huge part of what I love about it, is the LionSteel CK01. I love how easy it is to make and swap out bolsters and covers for it.

Here is the factory original state

Some new pants from a piece of old oily deer bone I dug up out of a creek bed.

Nice pieces of roasted maple for some understated classiness.

That is some gorgeous work!

Not a lot of the original Opinel remains!! Blade of San Mai - ground and fitted by Davide Steri, as was the forged collar!! I love this knife, and have been using it almost exclusively for a couple of weeks!!

That one's got my attention! Outstanding execution. I love how skinny and slicey the blad stock is.

This is a Klein rope knife that came here in a sad state. Purchased that way on purpose to give this another go.

I can nitpick a bunch of issues but overall I think it came out well. Learned a lot and that was the point.

Purple heart covers and removed the liner lock. Removed lots of rust. Stainless pivot pin and brass for the rest. Probably go with nickel pivots from now on since I've read stainless is way overkill.

Peening is fun and I'm enjoying trying to get them just right and looking good. The pivot on this is just a tad too tight so hopefully it breaks in with use. Nothing too tight it's hard to open, just doesn't snap.

Fun project.

This time I baked the block of purple heart in the over to achieve a really dark purple. In this photo you can see it compared to the same wood used on a Condor Kephart but only set in the sun to help change color. The drawback is that you loose a lot of the grain definition to get that nice dark purple color. You can still catch some in the right light.

Edit: if you are going to work with purple heart, make sure to have a solid supply of sanding disks, belts, paper etc... It eats this stuff up.

I had bought two Russell patch knife fixed blades to play around with. The first one got some nice maple burl scales and lives in my leatherwork box.

After fooling around with this second blade for months, it ended up as a friction folder. The tang was cut off and blade shaped, walnut handle formed, brass pivot pin, steel stop pin, g10 washers/stiffeners glued into the pivot end and a small micarta spacer at the bottom end because I went too far with the saw.

The brass pin looks bad on one side. I have no idea why. Maybe I beat on it too hard.

It's been living in my side pocket or lunch box for a few weeks and may just stay in the lunch box.
