Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Finally got some pics of my modded hawk...I painted the handle satin black with about 5 coats, and than five more coats of some satin stain. It really came out the way I wanted and it's pritty durable too with all those coats, no chipping yet. The head is colored with silver bake on Gunkote, a semi sharp convex grind and there's a mirrior finish on the hammer. I followed the directions of the members here to get that polish.

Ohhhh man that is sweet!

Tell us...
  1. How did you get that handle so black...what blackening method did you use?
  2. Tell us how you did the mirror finish on the poll.

Thanks for the comments guys.

As far as the handle I just painted it, I put about five coats of statin black wood paint on the handle. I wanted a almost synthetic look to the handle so each coat I sanded with 220. After the paint I put about 5 coats of satin polyurithane on it and sanded each coat with 220, and the last with 400. Because of the multiple coats and sanding of each layer it has made for durable finish. It has not chipped yet, only where I had to force the head into place.

The polish on the poll was pritty easy I just hit it with different grits going down all the way to 600, than I polished it with some metal polish and a rag. I would have been well served to go down to 1000 but I can't find any higher grit sandpapers. I used about 5 different grits with 400 and 600 last, before you move onto a higher number just make sure the only scratches there are the ones from the grit you are currently using. If you go to a lower grit and notice a deep scratch you will have to go all the way back to the lowest number and work your way back down.

So, I've been experimenting this evening with the vinegar and steel wool stain. It works quite well. I've given it a couple coats onto a scrap of wood I had kicking around the shop floor. It looks like it should work well. I might have to find another trail hawk this weekend and give it a shot on an actual handle...

Well, since I'm posting tonight, I should post this as well. I got this one finished a couple weeks ago...

HEEEEEEY!!! Let's see some pictures of the resulting handle bro!!! :grumpy:

Ok, scratch that. The vinegar stain worked great on the scrap of oak out of the garage, but it didn't work worth a crap on the actual handle. I've switched over to brushing on a thin ink. That seems to be staining it very well. It's black as coal. I'll try and get some pics up when it's done.

Gutshot, what is "thin ink?"

Yes! Need pictures! This is the long held method of "ebonizing" wood with "India ink" I posted previously...very very interested in how yours came out...it's the next method I intend to try.

If the KNIFECENTER of the Internet would get thier head out of thier asses and get my Trail Hawks out sometime before the new year, I have some ideas that yall will drool over!

Not really, , well somewhat, I just want my toys!

I feel your pain.I ordered my frontier hawk on the 15th of november and got it today.I alos have a norse hawk on the way.God knows when it'll get here.

Waiting on next paycheck to go buy some India ink and give it a whirl. This one's going to be all blacked out. Rather simple looking, but it'll have a definite theme with an all black ka-bar.

On where to buy them, I got mine in about 2 days through rocky-mountain-knives.com

Scott has always had decent prices, GREAT service, and extremely fast shipping. He's definitely my favorite vendor. His prices can be a few dollars higher, but it's really nice to have a vendor that always ships.

We need picts as soon as they are available!

Yeah, just need to get things rolling. Last night spent a lot of time filing and sanding the head as smoothly as possible.

You guys are like crack dealers. The first refinish is done and pictures have been posted. The handle is finished on the second trail hawk. The head is still in process, but getting close. And so now what what do I do? I stop at lunch and pick up a horse hawk...

PLEASE keep posting up and updating this, I'm getting swamped at work, but need more ideas, so PLEASE!!!

Especially you, photo-pimp Q...

I got 2 on the bench Massa Racer. Havin' trouble finding the time to start workin' on 'em though.
