Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Thanks for the replies.

I didn't expect anything more than diamonds in the rough. I can't wait to get to these but it won't be this weekend.

Any input on grits to start with on the handles?

i make a big giant deadfall in my shop with them by the door, to get rid of the STUPID and SLOW dogs and relatives....

you should see the aerial backflips my four-year-old can do.

she makes Greg Louganis look parapalegic, sez i.

My hawk....

Head was stripped, filed, smoothed out and painted OD green. Haft was sanded and rubbed with a ScotchBrite pad. I then used medium brown leather dye to stain it. I then heat it with a heat gun to soak up and dry the stain. Cord wrapped the handle and voila'!!! Next up is a leather sheath.

I'm thinking of having someone make a kydex cover for it. I will be carrying it in a large ring loop on a keeper. Similiar to a nightstick holder.
 
Here is a quick cover I made for it. I didn't think it out properly and the edge does slide out a very tiny bit from the top. Thinking about it now I should have made the strap wider. It would have solved that problem. Other than that little oversight it does work as intended, as a simple edge cover. I'm still looking for a kydex cover though.

For the inside of the eyes, I just use a round bastard file. About an hour on 'em and they're smooth enough to not cut the wood.

Vec, can you email me some info about your hawks?

Vector would you be able to make a synthetic handle for a double bit style head? What I'm getting at is making a "modern" nessmuk style axe.
 
i would definitely like to try it, brother.

i have been eyeballing those Marbles Chinese-made double-bits over at Ragweed Forge for a while.

i have never had one in my hands, so i don't know what the eye dimensions are, point of reference, etc.

i am just now getting the hang of hafting the Cold Steel VN hawks with long handles - they have a tiny eye and i don't want to wrap material around the outside like a Fiskars Hatchet, etc.

but composites are up to it, i reckon - ya just have to be really careful with how you do it, for the best sum of weight, strength, and performance.

good enough ain't good enough with something you want to trust, is how i see it.

Well, you're welcome to try stuff out on my V-hawk. I promise to throw it at my 150lb slab of poplar and flail any zombies about the head and neck.

No problem! Come by the LSU health sciences campus around May during finals. There will be plenty of student zombies stumbling around.


I'll have to drop Erica a line about what I'm looking for.

If you have the means, you can turn that hour into about 1min with a small air tool.:D
 
Hey. Watch the Topic drift. This Topic is supposed to be about methods folks use to mod their own Trail Hawks, not the VecStore, eh? :thumbup:
