Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

topView2.jpg

Well if this thread in general didn't somehow manage to make me a TH fan then this sure did! Aye Carrumba, that's nice!

....:)....

thank you, brother.

....i just meant to show that the sky is the limit when you are in hawk-modding madness, sez i,

...and we may have just raised the clowds a little bit more....

time will tell.

Hey Vec, will this new handle compress and friction-fit to the 'hawk head like normal wood does?

VERY sharp looking, I must add!

since this is the mod-it paradise thread - i thought you cool cats might want to see this.

i was thinking of the possible sacrilege it could be perceived to be ...to put one of my permanent Gen 1 Mk 2 handles on one of the custom hawk makers' hawk heads, like venerable-brother mark williams (and many others here, all respected).

....so i tried to "get with the program this week" on a composite slip handle protoype run that might lead to a handle for those beauties, that is a lot tougher than wood, same contour as a wooden slip handle, with no trade-offs except maybe for the traditional appearance.......

anywayz,...

here's a shot of Composite Slip Handle Prototype 1 on a Cold Steel Trail Hawk Head. -

it is fresh out of the mold and i haven't had a chance to shine it up, but it is still very beautiful with that deep graphite pattern -

(sorry my phone was all i had handy to take pics, brethren.)

this one is way-overbuilt i reckon,

...but the weight is about the same as a wood handle of the same size it was based off of - a stock 19 incher Cold Steel Hawk Handle.

it feels much more "lively" than wood, but i am not sure yet why - it must be the materials and techniques we are trying out - dunno! - we won't know until we get a bunch made for testing - this one was a lot of fun today though, in initial tests - it won't get to full strength for a couple days.

oh! - i thought you fellow-babies might know the answer to a question...;

is this the first composite slip handle on the planet...?

i don't believe i have ever seen one before.

but i can be a dope.

:o

we're not ready to sell them yet, since they are less than 24 hours old,

but - if any buddy wants to get on the list of interested hawk-O-maniacs - please just e-mail my erica at:

ericag@equinoxcoronado.com

keep showing those mods -i'm loving 'em....

vec

I hearby volunteer to participate in the testing phase.

Hey Vec, will this new handle compress and friction-fit to the 'hawk head like normal wood does?

you bet, brother jedi. - we refuse to compromise.

we will be developing this handle more this week.

you can actually "ratchet" the tension with a few options we intend to develop which will make this more than just a better handle, God Willing.

wish us luck.

if we succeed in this part of the Hawk Project, ...soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines might have something MADE IN THE USA that they can count on in the field at a price they can afford, may God Richly Bless and Protect them all.

brother captInsano - thank you so much for volunteering - dang decent of ya -i knew we could count on you brother.

that's a beautiful, unselfish human being right there.

Looks nice brother Vec. If you need more testers, count me in. Any more pics of the sky's the limit?

Hey guys,

As much as like talking about the mods and appreciate what vec has done let's not turn this into a thread just about his mods. This is a bout everyone's modded hawks. I suggest that vec start a thread on his mods and upcoming projects and I will sticky it if he wishes. I think a thread explaining how he goes about his modding would be welcome because I think we all would like to know.

yeah i've got more pictures, brother - but this ain't my store, nor do i truly have a store - i just wanted the brethren to get some ideas, and share with folks who could appreciate my revelry, this a humble stick of composite kick-ass.

i really like how every buddy pitches in here and shows their stuff - a very fertile environment for the three neurons i call my brain.

- and why shouldn't we be a community, right...?

....we could gang up when the zombies got too thick, like ol' King Henry....

....we few ...we Happy Few!

we Band of Brothers...!

(looking for french zombies with my new hawk.)

Very nice Vic ....you know I'll want one.. I've been buying all sorts of hawks lately......I got the sickness bad and I owe it all to you and Erica ....Thats a good thing :D:D:thumbup:

guilty as charged.

i need to seed the planet with as many of my hawks as possible so i don't look so strange with all the hawks i gotta have.

hawks are just a helluva lot of fun.

okay, back to work... i got some meeses to mouse, sez i....

:D

vec

wow, i mean WOW.

....suddenly i feel like posting a bunch of pictures... hehehe...!

we are doing another materials test tonite on the slip handles, ...and i'm a-thinkin' i want to skin some of these in 1000 Denier Cordura (i just can't beat that grip or the quiet of 1000 Denier Real-by-Gawd Cordura) ...got some other hawk-O-rama coming up too ...hope you fellow-babies like Multicam and ARPAT.

....and mousies - ya gotta have mousies, i've decided....

....sorry i am being a slow poke....

there's gonna be a hawkslide.

slow poke vec

Wow, 45 minutes to read through this thread and I certainly don't feel like it was time wasted.
I just got a CS Trail Hawk on the weekend, only had a few practice chops with it and didn't have a chance to throw it yet. Lots to look forward to.

Great work on all of these mod projects, love the clean look of those finished heads. I really like the black handles and the orange wrap looks awesome.

I plan to mod my hawk... give it some love as it has been used a bit. My main focus will be to make it more functional and to protect the handle... so some wrapping is in order.

I have a question about removing the handle, is it merely removal of the set screw and knock it off? Will it go back on just as easy?

Thanks.

absolutely correct, brother 'russ.

That is correct. As you read, it is best to file any excess metal on the inside of the eye hole and sand the haft to make a tight fit into the eye...then pound that sucka on ot off.
