Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Just be careful whatever you do. If you scroll up this page a bit you can see my latest, where I completely bunged up the back end with a grinder and had to fill it in with pewter. Some you win, some you don't.

Bryfry that is an outstanding hawk!

Looks great....ghetto? Dammit I was just hoping for good ole trailer trash then! Your ghetto looks perfect.

This is a crappy cell phone pic of the project so far, but I cannot find my camera....now where is the 12 year old, I bet they have it!

PLEASE take a look at the grain structure and layout of the handle Cold Steel sent!

Does it get any worse than that? It is exactly backwards. I have a Kentucky Coffee Tree handle on its way with great grain flow.

...hmmm, I'm not sure what you mean? Looks fine to me, but I'm no expert. Do you mean that you do NOT want the grain to run lengthwise down the handle? ...Because I've never seen one made with the grain going across short ways, that would be difficult to manufacture using hickory, and not very good for lateral strength of the handle.

Maybe if you post up a pic of your new handle with "correct" grain flow, and do a side by side shot to show what you mean.....?

he means that the handle needs to be rotated 90 degrees. It's like wooden baseball bats, you hit with the logo up or down, but never left or right. that handle's strength would be using the side of the hawk instead of the blade.

ETA...I just checked mine, and its exactly wrong also. I wonder if this is a scheme to sell more handles.

Same here, but I guess it is just carelessness. Even if the grain orientation isn't ideal, it doesn't mean that it will break right away.

Okay....ran into a road block on my replacement handle....I really want curly hickory...not maple and not ash but hickory....anyone? Dunlap does not have any.

This is my first attempt at mod'ing. I just finished it up last night. I had a blast doing it!! Every detail that I did I learned from this thread. (Thank You!!) I didn't try anything too exotic. I wanted to keep it simple for my first effort. I made some mistakes but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm already in the planning stages for my next attempt and the one after that and ..... :D

Your Hawk has the same grain flow as mine. It is turned 90 from perfect. Seems okay to me cause I usually an 90 degrees from perfect myself.

Thanks. I'm happy with it but I do see some things I wish I did different. I'm not real pleased with the pattern on the handle. I would go a little heavier on the pattern and a little more evenly. Over all I like it though. After all It is a user. :D

This is my pipe hawk. I had posted it before, but wasn't completely happy with how it turned out, so I got another haft and finished it differently. Also re did the patina the head, much happier with how it came out. For some reason it's looks a lot redder in the pics.

This is a trail hawk I picked up when I got the new haft, finished the same way as the the pipe hawk. I put some linseed oil on the head to protect it but it gets a brown tinge that makes it look rusted. I'll just take it off and oil them like I did before.

Nice looking hawks. Those hafts sure look long.
