Mod'ing The CS Trail Hawk

Thanks guys I lost my job some time ago with many layoff in my line of work. I needed something to do and couldn't find work. So I started with one tomahawk and got to work. I don't make much but It brings a little bit of money in to help me pay bills.

Sorry that they took your job!

Nice looking hawks, some of the finest works I've seen.

May I ask how you did the cross in one of the hawkheads?

I am sorry its been weeks. They are kinda one offs. Depending on the color of the handle at the start. The stain color I use. If i do a light burn or a dark burn. if I use a dye or not. and then depending on how I seal the handle. Some of them I can predict some I can't really.

Back in business fellow Hawkmen! There are six in the works and I've got a few days off, so the first to near completion is a CS Trail Hawk. All surfaces were cut down to reveal a nice light hawk I call my Ultra Light Fighter. The head will be acid blued and there will be my pewter star. The pic of a CS Spike hawk, under modification will become the Light battle hawk.

Very nice. How long will the handle be? I've thought about keeping the length pretty low on mine, mimicking the Winker axes

Hi pullrich, 18" for the modified Trail Hawks and 22" for the Modded Spike and Pipe hawks.

Hi mace, You are a prolific producer of some interesting hawk mods. I especially liked the war hammers and all your haft mods show nice design ideas and combination s of materials and color. Keep them coming.

There are several ways to do those. I'd use a round rasp first and finish them with a sandpaper wrapped dowel.

Just ready all 67 pages of this over several days...

I am now infected with the need to mod hawks!!! I have a trusty ole Norse hawk I've had for years and played with quite a bit, but as far as another hawk what would you all suggest? I'm a big ole lad so a heavier head is not too much of an issue. It seems the TH is smaller and more adept for smaller tasks around a camp. Let me know what you guys think and where the best place to pick one up is.

The rifleman's is bigger than others, especially if you leave on the poll. I dont think it's much use as a tool, because the bottom of the blade juts out. Designed for piercing things, it seems. Personally I like the Frontier best.

As far as best place to pick one up, I think that deal-spotting is verboten here.

Okay so I got my hawk in today, I took the file to the eye, and smoothed it out. So on the bottom right I have a small gap, so I was curious where you guys think I should sand to get a tighter fit. Sorry for such a dumb question, but I would be lying if I said that this was the last one. I have the head sitting over night right now with some paint remover on it, hopefully that will be ready to go in the morning. Thanks to anyone that can help me out.

I use a rasp (found for a buck at a garage sale) to remove wood faster. I think I get more control that way, too, able to even out the spots that are making the gaps like you show in the pic. That said I'm hit and miss on getting good fits so would like to hear what others do, too.

Okay i got the paint off the blade, and now I have sanded it down a little bit. I like the look, but I am curious to see what a apple cider vinegar patina would look like on it? Also do you think it is smooth enough to try a etch?

On the haft, I have it sanded and smothed, I put a little bit of fire to it. Now i need to buy some stain, and after I stain it the color I want, is there something else I need to put on the haft after the stain?
