I would like to share something with you guys that I have been working on for the past month or so. To start off, I do my own leatherwork, I specialize in sheaths for Cold Steel Tomahawks, but I also do custom work as well. Here is my site if you would like to take a look at my work.

Anyways...before I had even purchased my BK2 and BK9 I have always pondered what kind of sheath I could make for these knives. I really wanted to come up with some unique. Before I even started cutting the leather, I made concepts in Inkscape. Some of you may remember when I drawn up a Becker Tomahawk concept with Inkscape. Since at the time I did not have my Becker knives in my hand yet I grabbed some Google images, scaled them to 1:1 to start drawing. Here is what I come up with, I call it the M.P.S.S. or Modular Platform Sheath System.
To begin, there is the main sheath platform that has screws at designated areas. These screws can be removed and the user and swap out different components on the sheath. The front of the sheath allows mounting of a panel that can be fitted with any number of accesories. You could essentially mount whatever would fit on a roughly 3"x5" panel.
Options for the front panel can be-
Piggy Back sheaths (BK11, BK13 Remora for example)
Multi Tool pouchs
SAK sheath
Compass pouch
Sharpening Stone pocket
Not only can the front panel be changed, but the belt loop can be changed to fit your chosen needs. Also, a MOLLE attachment can be utilized on the back of this sheath.
You may be wondering how these screws attach to the sheath. Well one day while looking for unique hardware that I could utilize in my sheaths, I came across brass threaded inserts for wood. I had used them before in another sheath and they worked great. It allowed me to attach components independently on each side of the threaded insert. Here is an example. This is a Horizontal Carry Sheath for a Pmoore Duty Knife.
So, once I finally got my Becker knives in the mail, I got to work on the actual templates. This is the start of the BK2 prototype. It is made of 4 stacks of 8oz Veg-Tan leather.
I had ordered more of the threaded inserts to use in this sheath. Well I tried them out, and they were too short for this thick of sheath. Long story short, I had to custom make some brass inserts that were long enough. So once I had those in hand I was able to complete this prototype.
The screws for the belt loop are countersunk into the leather.
The screw for the retention strap is countersunk as well to avoid scratching the handle.
I am still currently working on the front panel that has an altoids pouch. I also have the BK9's prototype sheath's components cut out and ready to assemble.
I am designing this sheath system with the end users in mind, with the number one priority being function first. I figured who better to help design this sheath than the Becker heads! Please feel free to give me your input.
Thanks for looking, and stay tuned for updates.
