Moosez Challenge Discussion Thread

What knives to bring for the first challenge?

I think the BK2, BK9, and the BK11.

Might have to make one of those stay home when my BK10 gets here. How does a father pick one of his beloved children to leave behind. Can I bring 4, and just tell you all I roughed it and used only 3. May have to do that. If I make one mistake in the pics and picture all 4, I bet you all will pick it out. Sorta like Where's Waldo?, except with Becker Blades.

Maybe an idea for those that were wondering about bringing a girlfriend/wife along, would be to treat them as an injured/sick person, meaning you would have to fashion a leg splint, neck brace, gather wild medicines to treat an appropriate, debilitating sickness etc. Finally, you would have to fashion a mode of transport for them, be it a stretcher, sled, gurney, or such to get them out of the bush. Not just something that you can sit in for a few minutes to take pictures, but a practical and realistic means of extracting your wounded partner. Also, the partner should only be able to contribute to what they would realistically. This means if they have a broken leg, they're not off collecting firewood. Really the person shouldn't do much more than sit back, relax and watch you take care of them. Lastly, you don't get any extra surplies because you have an extra. You have to share the food and water that you packed in, meaning you better be extra quick about finding a source of water and wild edibles.

I'm not saying that this is what you Should do, just an idea of a more feasible way to work in the spouse. Moose might still dock you marks for bringing company...part of the difficulty is being alone in the woods, for 2 days, without support or company. But I do understand those of us with wives/girlfriends/partners might be hesitant to leave the other and venture into the woods alone, especially those unaccustomed to that kind of camping. Just some food for thought.

I'm out on this one guys. Getting out for 48 hours ain't gonna happen. As far as knives go, I'd take the BK6 machete, a 10, 12 or 7 and something small, remora.

Didnt read this whole thread, but make sure to have back up supplies in your car jic. Its fun to do these minimalistic trips, but without a safety net youre askin for Pvt Murphy to come visit ya. Id be in if I were a beckerhead. Good luck though, I look forward to the pics. Redmech is gonna throw it down on this one I have a feeling.

Is this a Beckerhead only contest? I thought I read it was a open contest. Either way it sounds like fun!

Jeremy

Also, are you allowed to use "found" items? Within reason of course.

For instance if I a hunk of scrap metal while I am out could I use it to make fish hooks or a spear tip?

Thanks

Jeremy

Hey J, I'm not a Beckerhead, It's an open contest, so you could give er' a try if you'd like. I'm thinking try some squirrel poles and limb lining, between all the cordage we can bring and a bit of hooks in Altoids tin. The toughest part of this contest is getting the time away from the family and work.

This is an open contest, anyone can play.

Found items are good to go, but take a pic of them, how you found them.

Hey moose, little problem here. I can't hunt, trap or fish (it's illegal in my area) and I can't get anywhere where I could... what to do? Do I have to get by with my 2 ramen packs or do I get a 3rd one? I guess plant foraging is possible but doesn't provide real calories :D

The loadout is what you get. You can survive alot longer than 2 days without food, the ramen is there to make you feel better, but really, after the first day, you won't be hungry anymore.

You can go a month without food and survive. Just cuz you're hungry, doesn't mean you're starving. Lol

Illegal to fish? Might be time to grab the bug-out-bag and put it into use. That would be sad not to be able to fish.

Not sure I would want to eat fish caught in Berlin, Germany.

Now, if I caught me some brats and beer, ok.

Two days with no food is no big deal at all (though the first day will be the toughest). Bring warmer clothes than you normally would though - you tend to get colder with little or no fuel in the furnace.

I was SO EXCITED to see choice one. I actually got up and starting loading my pack and told my wife I would be hitting the dirt this weekend.
I came back to my computer to accept the challenge and saw the "make fire" requirement.

Sadly the state is in a burn ban and fire is out for me. I really wish this would have been done this fall after we get some rain.
Oh well. I guess I will wait until the September Challenge.

Before you say, No I don't wanna do the commercial.

Good luck guys. :)

Its pretty dry here, which is nice for a change.

But, hey, there's a whole month of time, perhaps you'll get a little mana from heaven, never know.

Moose

No rain would be nice. I think it hasn't stopped raining yet. We've had rain at least once a week threw fall last year.
