Mora passaround?

Ok, like I mentioned before, I didn't get the time to play with these knives like I wanted(expected) to, but I did do a little with them. So here's my review.

The sheaths were cool, and I like the whistle lanyard. Although, I think the Mora is a bit too heavy to be a neck knife, or at least the necklace strap should be thicker, more like a strap or braided like the whistle lanyard. Just my opinion of course.

First of all, the custom was a lot bigger than I expected it to be. Very sturdy feeling, nice blade shape. The blade might be a little wider than I like, but it worked. Handle was comfortable.

The handle mod on the Mora was interesting. The front groove was nice, but the back finger groove was a bit too far back for me, so it didn't really make any difference to me. My only complaint with the wood handled Mora's is that the handle is smaller than the blade were they meet. That just bugs me, not only does it look ugly but it seems it would cause problems and possibly be a hazard.

Now lets talk about the mods I did. Not much, I just put an aluminum tube in the lanyard hole of the Mora, and lightly sanded it to clean it, and let it soak in my linseed oil and pine pitch finish. I was going to square off the spine but it seems someone beat me to it.

Ok, so I took both of them and decided I would use them to build a little fire with some oak scraps I had in the back.

Battoning: Man, that oak was tough for it's size. Both knives did great on this, but I think I will give the edge to the custom knife. Not that it necessarily did a better job, but the thicker stock gave me more confidence when battoning. I guess it just "felt" better.

The Mora just barely edged out the custom in the feather stick(shavings) department. They both did very well, and were very close, but if I were to choose a winner, I would go with the Mora.

The customs spine wasn't square enough to get scrapings, but that is easily fixed and I imagine there wouldn't be a difference in performance if they were both able to do it. I didn't want to mod the custom though, because I didn't think that was what the maker wanted, so I left the spine alone. I used the mora to get my scrapings and to strike the firesteel, and whooala, fire!!!

As far as usability goes, I really enjoyed handling and using the custom. It just felt sturdier and more comfortable to use. They both had there high and low points, and I had fun playing with them.

P.S. I got the address for the next person. They will go out in the mail tomorrow.
